I plan on doing my own final drive oil changes. I have about 600 miles or so on my new bearing in the final drive and figure I would start now. What oil should I use, how often should I change it? also, do I need a differnt oil while only 600 miles and then change? like break in oil or do I just start with the good stuff? The dealer showed me how easy it is to change the oil in the final drive so I figure I can do this one alot. He said the key to making a final drive survive is constant changing of the oil. Also, are the drainplugs in therec ome with a magnetic tio or do you have to replace the drainplug to a magnetic uniot to keep on the lookout for shavings?

My FD was recently replaced by BMW, after 600 miles I replaced it with Amsoil Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube 75w-90. This oil meets the same specification as the Castrol EP Gear oil I think!

Since they change all the oils after the first 600 miles, I'd change the oil in the FD now. As for what oil to use, as long as it meets the specs set forth by BMW, you should be good with anything you want to use.
