I'm an LT rider but I've been given an '05 1200RT as a loaner. Don't have any books or other reference.
How do you get to the battery? I assume it is under the seat, but how do you open it up? It had trouble starting at the dealer, he gave it a quick charge. It had labored starting this morning, so if I get stuck here at work I need to know how to get in there and jump it. Thanks.
Would like to experiment a little with the ESA. I can change modes, but I can't get it out of the two-up pre-load.
Interesting ride in contrast to the LT.
Thanks for you help.

Dan,
You can access the battery by removing the seat(s). The key access is under the tailight. As for the suspension, you need to hold the button down (while in neutral) with the engine running. You should then be able to select the various modes from there.
Careful now, you may want to sell that LT :)

Key unlocks seat. Located under rear tail light. Battery is located under front part of main seat. Be careful if it has heated seats, as there will be wiring to the each seat.

FYI, that bike may have a gel battery...you need a specific charger to connect to it. I know my 07 has a gel battery...

I have found that I need to stop the bike to change ESA pre-load modes. I don't mean turn it off, just stop it from rolling, staying in gear.
Tommy says just shift to neutral. I will try that the next time I am out -- that is, keep rolling but shift to neutral -- and see if that works.

My recommendation is to get off the bike for the pre-load adjustments, especially if you are going to a one up pre-load to 1 + luggage or 2 up - reason for that is minimize loading of the controls as it adjusts.
Personal thing only

Your specific questions have been answered. I can only add that I had an LT, tested the RT, bought it, and never looked back. (But make sure it comes with a good battery!)

I also had an LT for 3 years and put 32K miles. Recently traded for an RT and don't regret it.. Power, slow speed handling, overall handling, gas mileage are all superior in my opinion. Love the RT.
