We tried to see some of texas last year but got called back home to Fargo, ND due to wife's health issues. Would like to try again this summer and am having a hard time finding good information on the scenic byways in the hill country, big bend and panhandle areas. We love scenery and will again probably be traveling with a dog so the standard tourist traps would probably not welcome us. Just looking for good runs with good scenery.
Just thought about this, need to update signature. Mileage is now 141,000+. Had a quick trip to Florida.

traveling by what ? If you will be riding a MC get a AAA texas Hill country map. It has all the back roads in the hill country, it is what I use. One or two new roads each ride, maybe. Other areas have different roads for MC.
The Ride Texas Magizine has different rides in their issues.
when are you going to be here ? what else do you need ?

This is a great starting place Hwy 335, 336 & 337 are known as " The Twisted Sisters" they are South West on Austin. Any of the roads in this part of Texas are fun.

Will be on the old LT and plan on being in Texas the last 2 weeks of June (longest days of the year) even though they may be a tad warm, we have done AZ & NM in previous years at this time and it seems heat keeps the other tourists away.

A tad warm, eh' .............
I know y'all (Jeff, Shannon and the Minpin) are "accomplished" travelers
that have seen your share of "weather"
and I'm also real happy to hear that you're both healthy enough to
want to "get back to Texas" (it's great riding country)
But don't underestimate how "brutally hot" it gets "down there" in the summertime.
I like it hot that's why I live in FL
but going to west Texas in the summah time ain't my idea of fun.
With that said: I wish you many more safe and happy miles.

You think west Texas is bad in the summer, try Houston some time. Twixt the heat, the humidity, all that concrete, metal and folks... tis like being in an oven stuck on IH 10 during rush hour(s).

Amen Brother...
There is always the Davis Mtns - they have a bit of elevation, so they not be quite as hot...

I was gonna mow the yard yesterday and the temp in Victoria, Tejas was only 91 but the Heat Index was at 99* all day. The heat isn't so bad, it's the humidity that'll kill ya.
