I have been biking for eight years. I started late in life so am making up for lost time. My bikes in order of appearance were, Yamaha Virago 250, Kawasaki ER5, Kawasaki ZR7S and BMW R1200ST.
I had the ST for three years. I find it a little sore on a long trip so after a lengthy test drive on a GS and a sweet deal from my local dealer, the GS is now on order. I hope to be collecting on Wednesday. Happy days.
I look forward to swapping stories.

The more you ride it the better you will like it. Congratulations on a rather brilliant choice in motorcycles.

I'm a nooby too. Purchased an '01 1150 GS last weekend and took a long ride yesterday with my wife on the back. WOW! It handles WAY better than the LT and my wife reported that it is more comfortable for her legs and she feels more one with the bike than on the LT. Big grins on our faces going down the road. If anyone has an aluminum top case they would like to sell, we're definitely interested.

Glad to hear there are grins on "both" faces. I am still getting used to mine and the wife has not been on the back of it yet. I am still a little nervous of the high position as my toes are tipping the ground. That is a little odd as the test drive on the demo machine was lower. Could reach the ground with the balls of my feet. Hope it beds in shortly as she can't wait. Have fun with your new GS. That machine is awesome. I should have taken the plunge years ago.

See if your feet are flat on the ground when she is on the back. I couldn't believe how much the suspension compressed with my wife on the back and she only weighs about 125#. I acutally got her permission to post that;>) It really surprised me and there are Ohlins on the bike set up for previous owner who weighed over 220#. Check it out and let me know how much closer your heels are to the ground with the two of you on the bike.

Ok. Here is what happened. The wife was a little nervous about her first trip. She got up on the bike in the driveway to "try it for size" for the both of us. Lo and behold, both my feet planted squarely on the ground. Wife weighs in at about 150lbs. So. She goes to get her helmet and I set the ESA (new toy) to two up while she suits up. She climbs aboard for the maiden voyage to the local shops and boom, feet are back up on tippy toes again.
That said, once the bike was moving it handled as if she was not there. Very easy to control and we both enjoyed it. The only snag is getting used to starting and stopping making sure it is perfectly balanced before putting a toe on the tarmac. It is a concern at the moment but the fun factor for both of us more than compensates.
