Great rides to Jerome, Sedona, Grand Canyon

http://www.peppermillreno.com/

Virginia City, Tahoe, Bunny Ranch, ;) Topaz Lake

www.groveparkinn.com (http://www.groveparkinn.com/)

Blue Ridge, Dragon tail, Skyway, and much more

I have stayed in these places and they are all very unique. Yes the Pepermill is a Casino, but is relatively cheap, great facilities and the roads lead straight to Lake Tahoe.

The other two are pricey but unmatched for character and the riding nearby is great.

Close to Austin, lots of members live nearby, all around a nice place.

BTW, we haven't been in the upper midwest or the northeast yet, so finding something up that way with 250+ rooms would be good. :)

And an interesting concept might be that we take over the entire town of Red River, NM. They have a very centralized conference facility, and I think the whole town from end to end is smaller than some of the resorts we've stayed at.

El Jeffe,

If I recall correctly that condo we rented in Red River was big enough to hold all of CCR. LOL

Not a bad idea El Jeffe. Nice town, great riding, something for everyone.

On the other hand, last time you and I went to Canada together was for the BMWMOA rally and having it in Canada had too many challenges. That being said, beautiful country.

Lake George, NY would be cool. I would think if they can host Americade that it would be able to accomodate us.

Not insane... just slightly crazy. Like many others here. You know who you are :) I did not consider that not everyone is as heat resistant as I am.

The temperatures around Austin and the Hill Country are not that different from Braselton. Arizona should be a piece of cake...what's 90 degrees as long as the humidity is low :)

I like the Idea of going to Canada a lot. I have been to some of the places suggested. They are all great!

If you are thinking of Canada, Randy and Wolfgang are correct, the Banff Springs and Jasper Lodge are great places located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. There is also some fantastic mountain riding.

Another place to consider is http://www.fairmont.com/lakelouise/.

The hotel sits on the Lake which is glacier fed so the water turns a emerald crystal blue due to the minerals in the water which looks like milk running into the one end of the lake. Banff is only 40 minutes away and Jasper about 1 1/2hours of which you ride through the ice fields.

I also have a contact, sister, who works for Fairmont Hotels.

Having worked as an Intl customs manager with a major shipping firm for a number of years I would add it will be a very large hassle for any US based vendors to participate in Canada. The paperwork and cost is prohibitive. You can't simply put "gift" on 40 sets of J pegs or tankbags being transported by a commercial enterprise. Doesn't mean some will not make a go of it. A "lesser" expensive way around it is to only bring samples in on a registered carnet and not do any actual business in Canada. The vendor area would become more of a trade show. Otherise, anything actually sold would need to be declared by the purchasers upon US re-entry for duty and taxes. Sales income to the vendors would be subject to Canada VAT as well.

eljeffe
May 7th, 2008, 4:44 pm
I could live with a CCR that didn't have vendors selling anything for the opportunity to have it in Canada once. Given the intimate group we'd probably have, I think we should do it up in Jasper. Lake Louise and Banff Springs are bad choices either. That place in Quebec looked interesting as well, but the best riding will be in Alberta.

And I thought NAFTA was supposed to make doing business in Canada easier. LOL....

One other issue is the new passport requirements. Those who do not have passports will need them to traverse the Canadian border. This adds another $160 per person to the tab along with planning ahead eight weeks to get it in hand.

I agree it would be worth the effort and vendor changes to have it in Canada one time. It would be a great experience and a very popular event. You would need contacts in Canada to make it happen.

(NAFTA chiefly benefits Mexico)

If you decide to have it in Canada especially in Alberta as El Jeffe suggests there are a number of us in Alberta who could provide help. you just have to ask.

As mentioned by Ken I am sure there is a number of us who would be able to help if it was held in Alberta Canada.

As for the border crossing passport issues mentioned I guess as a Canadian who travels to the US for such things as rally's on a regular basis I do not even give crossing the boarder a second thought. I have had a passport for over 30 years ,who does not have a passport these days! (Sorry I guess I just do to much traveling in beautiful North America to think about borders, my bad).

While I don't doubt that a number of us already have passports my guess would be a good majority of Americans do not plus it's only been in the last year or so they have been required for travel to Mexico and Canada. Unless one was going off the continent you didn't need one. Even so, my wife and I have had them for a long time as it used to speed you through customs. Now everyone is in the same line!

Sounds like Alberta could work and there is a nice troup of Canuks ready to help out.

May 9th, 2008, 6:18 pm
I think that is one great idea! We have a fair number of Canadian members, some of whom have already offered assistance. The Hotels look absolutly first class, and the riding should be breathtaking. Yes, its a long ride for many of us, we need passports, and some vendors may not show up.

But I think this could be the ultimate CCR. Plus we would do our little part to promote a friendly relationship with our Candian friends.

Randy Ferras
K1200LT, 05'OK Randy, this is to you and Ken:

I also have found the border crossing to be quite easy and it is even easier now that I carry a passport. For an IRS sanctioned non-profit organization, the tax laws alone could make a Canadian Reunion impossible to pull off. After that we would have vendor logistics and other problems to deal with. While it is unlikely we could have a CCR in Canada, many of us would like to have any excuse to go to go to the Banff/Jasper area. That said, we certainly could put together a gathering of riders for an 'unofficial' rally. I am certain we could put together a nice gathering, if we could pick the right time of year and find the proper facility (or facilities) to host us.

We would need to pick the best time of the year as well as the best location in terms of weather, minimizing tourism crowds and lodging pricing. My thoughts and past experience is that early June would be the best time. We would probably find better lodging outside of the Banff/Jasper area, perhaps as far west as Revelstoke or maybe south into B.C. We would need to set a date far enough in advance to secure an adequately sized hotel block and to give people plenty of time to plan for the trip. It is only about 65 rooms but The Crossing (http://www.thecrossingresort.com/) in the heart of Banff National Park is a very popular motorcycle destination.

If you or any other Canadian members would like to try to make this happen, send me a PM. If there is enough interest, we might be able to put something together and promote it. I know that it would be wonderful for those of us who have been before and spectacular for those who have never seen the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I would be happy to volunteer to help with any aspect of the planning and/or execution.

I was thinking the exact same thing, Randy. An unofficial get-together with 50-100 of your closest friends just may work. Then we could leave CCR in it's current format. I'd love to see something like that come together.

We could also hold CCR fairly far north one of these years so the Canadians have less distance to travel down to us. :)

And while many people have requested that we go back to some previous location, we always prefer to look for areas we haven't visited.

I found one place with a brewpub and restaurant right next to what would best serve as the vendors area. We might need to up the vendor registration for such convenience, or even more lucrative -- cut a deal on a percentage of beer sales....

You might want to consider moving the dates to later in June as the evenings in the mountains can still be quite cool at that time. Also you may want to consider having it just prior to the start of the Calgary Stampede. That way a person could just add a couple of days and take in what has been advertised as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth".

We also are blessed with arguably the most stunning scenery in Canada and you may want to look at a tour type of outing with overnight stops in different spots.

Just a few thoughts to consider.

Randy, pm me when you get some information about hotels and we can toss around a few ideas before we present them to the group.

I know there are always concerns about getting good attendance and, of course, California always accounts for a large portion of the crowd. I want to go on the record that I am one Californian who would love to see CCR in the Northeast! It's the only part of the country I haven't yet ridden!

I'm guessing that Mr Meese doesn't mind the miles either...
