Leesburg to Roanoke VA Suggestions

Next Monday two friends and I are traveling from the Leesburg area to Roanoke for a conference. I'm the type that will normally take the quickest and most direct route, but my friends want to stay off the interstate. I'm looking for some suggestions for the trip down.

Why not take the Blue Ridge Parkway?

If it were me I'd split the difference. That part of I-81 is beautiful. What I can recommend is 311 going from Roanoke up to the little community of New Castle and then up to Paint Bank. Check out the moose hanging in the back of the General Store. This ride has been written up in multiple ride mags. Depending on the time that you have available you can do a circle or that is one ride that is worth doubling back on. Have a blast!

Thanks for the suggestions. One of the guys I'm riding with knows the area and the plan is to go down Rt 15 to 29 and take that all the way into Lynchburg. From Lynchburg and then pick up Rt 460 and take that into Roanoke. I had mentioned the Blueridge Parkway but that would all to much time and the other guys didn't want to take it. The middle of Skyline drive is under construction from mile maker 31-65. Its down to one lane in places and just grave roads in other. This is suppose to last until this fall.
