I'm planning to replace my clutch (05 K1200LT)
I've read that fuel tank has to be removed to accomplish this task - and - it sounds like it the immersion-tube will have to be calibrated if I replace the tube or tank
any way around this - I would rather not take it to a dealer

I don't think you'll have any issues with removing the tank. It has to be done for a lot of the normal maintenance. However, the clutch is a big project and removing the fuel tank is a minor part of it. Do some reading here and take a look at the pictures posted by ccpastorjack.
Good Luck,
Kevin

I have never replaced a clutch but you might as well do some other maintenance when you have your bike apart as far as the clutch. new air filter, fuel filter, etc. Might as well hit it all while your in there. And as stated the fuel tank is a very minor part of it, if your looking to cut a corner, its not a very big corner to cut.

Thanks Kevin - the post by ccpastorjack was great

Thanks Jeremy - good suggestions; I'll be sure to do those things and more. I'm not trying to cut corners, but, I live a hundred miles from the nearest dealer, I have the time, and, feel the need to be able to do repairs myself.
Thank you both for chiming in - Carl

So Carl,
It's been a year since you posted this: how did it work out for you? Did you replace the clutch and get everything working again? Any leftover parts?
