I'm visiting Visalia tomorrow and was wondering if 198 into and/or through Sequoia is doable. I've got Tuesday (12/20) open and looking for a two-up ride.

You can check current info for any numbered California road at http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/

It shows some road maintenance delays on SR 198 just west of SR 25, but all else shows clear. Enjoy the ride.

I would call before you go. The ranger station at Giant Forest will usually answer the phone or call you right back. 559-565-3341 There have been snow flurries since early this afternoon building to regular snowfall over 5500 ft overnight. I doubt you will be able to get all the way through the park to Kings Canyon. Daytime temps predicted to be in low 30s tomorrow. You can expect it to get significantly colder and cloudier as you travel north towards Grant Grove Village which is at 6500 ft. If the road into Kings Canyon itself is open, it is usually warmer as you drop a couple thousand feet during the first 8-10 miles. Be sure to fuel up before you go in as they are on full winter closure now. I would bring electrics if you have them and if your pillion doesn't like constant cold, head towards the ocean. You can check Sequoia's webcam Monday AM and see how much snow is on the ground. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/natur/nature-smiley-12.gif
