I talked to a local M C mechanic that has been wrenching for the last 40 yrs about plugging and patching tires. He said that he can take tires to auto tire dealer and has a hot patch (vulcanized patch) put in and then puts a tube in and runs it. Has anyone ever tried this ? Has anyone ever run tubes in Metzler 880s ? What do you folks think. and yes he is running them himself.

if PROPERLY done, a "plug patch" is very reliable.

The "problem" is not in holding the air.. it is in the tire carcass integrity. Broken cords or delamination of layers caused by the puncture are the real concern.

Depending upon the puncture, I might (me, not you), run the tire with just a little concern.

Certainly not an expert, but I would never do that. My understanding is that the potential heat generated by the tubeless tire/tube combination could cause problems. Also the rims are differeent from tube to tubeless tires, so that may be a factor. FWIW, I would use a plug and then only as a temporary fix and replace the tire as soon as possible.

P.S. I would NOT run a tube inside a "tubeless" motorcycle tire.. without extreme care.. (slower speeds, stopping often to check the tire, etc..

So, not worth the headache.. yeah, tire costs are OUTRAGEOUS... but, like your eyes, you only have two... and can't function comfortably with only ONE.

Tires are one of the most important safety features on your bike.

Personally, I would not put a tube in a tubeless tire.

I run Ride-On TPS (http://www.ride-onshop.com/link.cgi?affiliateID=13) in my tires. It keeps them hydrostatically balanced and seals them to where there is never any air loss.

If I run over something that punctures a tire, the TPS seals it immediately.

the guys are right if you putting a tube into a tyre that has a vulcanised patch repair is the same as putting tube into a new tyre. they can go bang due to heat and pressure probs shouldnt do this.
if you have to use a tube dont patch the hole, thats what I was told. I know tyres are expensive but there is only one at each end and that is all thats between you and the slab if in doubt replace.

I've heard of similar products of tyre sealant and thought it may cause a balance problem, by your mileage I assume that doesnt happen ?? just curios

My medical copay is higher than a new tire ,forget the pain and thrill of going down with a 1300lb bike and the wife . I only repair to limp home !
I am all for saving $ ,but brakes and tires no way.
