Never! We have until 1Q '90 to hold on to XP  : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

And "critical" patches will continue until the end of time (2014) (well, in computer years anyway): http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&p1=3223&x=14&y=9

Vista! what a piece of crap, Bought a new machine with it preloaded, spent maybe 3 hours getting to somewhere close to usable.

Think I need to go Open Source and soon.

Not only your approach, but even the gubermint agency I work for is currently evaluating if they switch all the office computer to open source. The director even though he is a M$ guy through and through is scared out of his mind come Jun 10 and XP will go away.

*I* for one would agree with the decision to abandon the M$ single track train, and create a terminal server for the few isolated islands where we NEED a M$ server because the software is not available anywhere else.

We'll see where this will go. We live in interested times indeed.

For desktops, our school district is going to stay with Win XP for as long as humanly possible. And our Windows 2000/2003 Servers are meeting our low-demand needs . . . at the moment.

A Subscription Pit Stop on the Road Toward Cloud Computing

Paul Thurrott, news editor, thurrott@windowsitpro.com
Changing deep-set behavior and habits is difficult. I was reminded of that fact this week while writing a news story about a joint Microsoft/Novell effort to convince businesses in China to switch from free versions of Linux to paid, supported copies of Novell's SUSE Enterprise Linux. At first blush, you might think that Microsoft's cooperation in promoting Linux is central to that particular story. And certainly, that's the tact I took in my own article (windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/98922/microsoft-novell-ply-paid-software-in-china.html ) about the event. But looking at it more deeply, what this is really about is changing behavior.
