I wouldn't own the bike without the backup backrest!. My wife uses it to help her get on and it is never in the way. It is super easy to instal as well. You can ususally pick them up used for $200 +. If you use the Jpegs, you need the backrest

Do keep in mind that having a backrest for the driver can inhibit the passenger from getting off in an accident or slide. Just comething to consider. I did and bought a back-a-line back support from CycleGadgets instead. Cost $50 vs. $350.

I suppose the opposite school of thought would say "the backrest can also aid the passenger in pushing away from the bike in the event of a fall or slide" My passenger likes the security of the backrest when I slam on the brakes as it gives her something to hold onto and doesn't cause her to push me forward.

I have to agree that the pushing away when braking hard is nice, but I see no way for the passenger to get their leg over the backrest to get off in an accident or slide. At least my wife (5' 4") would be unable to do it.
I don't want to detract from the discussion though. Just make the information available so people can make their own informed choice about it.

We've had the bakup on our '06 LT for about 1 1/2 years, and love it. My back needs it and my wife loves the security it provides her. So far, well worth the expense. Also, we learned to adjust our getting on and off approaches so we have little to no problems there. Related to the back problem...,when I added the driver peg extenders, it made my back feel better on long trips, either from the change in hip angle or some other physics issue. All I know is that have the Kontour seat, Bakup back rest, pegs from Suburban and J-Pegs and day-long trips are fun, not torture.

I've got a Backup backrest on my RT and LT and really like them. The issue for my wife is the hardware protrudes towards her. She keeps talking about packing some foam up under the cover to offer some padding.
I've sat back there and checked it out and ouch, I sure wouldn't want to slide towards it. It also make me feel a little claustrophobic.

You can slide that trunk (top case) back and give her more room. Stock trunk position makes it a tight fit with the big ol' back rest bracket. BMW included four holes that allow you to move the trunk back about 1-1/2''. Sure makes a difference. In fact I drilled some custom holes and shoved the trunk back far enough that the trunk backrest is flush with the little short backrest that's part of the pillon seat. She loves me for it. She has plenty of room to move around back there now.

I read about that one step adjustment in the manual. Doesn't it make the topcase over hang in the back and does it look ok not being flush back there?

I does indeed hang over but we don't think it ruins the lines of the bike. Comfort for my lady is important so it's cool with me but take a look and judge for yourself.

Im solo 90% of the time... no problems and wouldn't ride without it...
If you need more room for the SO, put on the Ft. Rack... she can sit on that....

Thanks for the picture. That's certainly something to consider. I'm also looking into a Corbin and one of the aspects I really like about it is how cleanly the riders backrest mounts by a slim post in the back of the riders seat.
I know the Corbin backrest isn't made to be as adjustable as the Backup, but otherwise how do the two compare comfort wise? Anyone?

I own a 2005 K1200LT. My wife loves the pillion seal comfort but says there is not a lot of room. I plan to move the trunk back to give her another 1.5 or so inches which should help.
I also need a drivers backrest and Bakup is the product I'm looking at. How much of her room will I be taking back if I mount this backrest?

In our opinion only, moving the trunk back as far as possible is a MUST!. The steel channel bracket on the backrest eats some your passenger's real estate. And you wouldn't believe what a couple of extra inches will do for pillon comfort on the LT.

I bought the Bakup backrest from a fellow forum member last summer. I put on about 20 k miles last season with the back rest.
I can unequivocally state that I wouldnīt travel on my LT anywhere without it.
This product really holds its value therefore you will have no problem unloading it if you do not find it to your satisfaction.
Her Majesty does not find it to be an issue in any way. That said, she is 5ī 7Ļ and built like an Amazon.
I originally thought I would use it solely for long distances since mounting and dismounting it is a 2 minute procedure. As it turns out, it has yet to come off the bike since I bought it.
I canīt speak for any other similar products but this is one farkle I couldnīt be without.
P.S. I just returned from STC IV with a buddy who bought an RT last year. This was his first long haul trip and when he first saw the Bakup last summer, he was really skeptical. After returning home he told me that his first order of business was to buy the Bakup for his RT. I think he ordered it through A & S over the Web.

Okay help me understand so I don't get in hot water with the wife, Net gain for the wife = back +2" by moving trunk back and a loss of -1" (?) = Net gain of space +1". Is that about it? She may not be to happy with the Bakup!

The wife didn't complain with the trunk moved back as far as it could go with the OEM holes. But with winter gear on there was not much wiggle room left back there. After I slammed it back she hugged my neck. I used the RonKMiller method as my guide to set it back farther than the factory design allows for. Not quite as far as he made his, but almost. We like it.
