Well I have owned 2 RTs and I am debating between a used LT or RT. I have baout 10k to buy a new bike. I have had a 99 RT and a 97 RT. My dislikes are the surging, cable actuated clutch, cluncky tranny, poor gear ratios, 24 hour clock, narrow windscreen and horrible stock seat. Well my 97 had a mayer saddle on it so I know I can get a comfy seat. I also had handlebar risers that put me in a very domforable riding position and there are wider screens available. Unfortunatly that clock is still the same. My big question here is if I would be happy with the improvements made in the 1150rt. I would probably look for a 2004 with twin spark. Does the 6 speed tranny do a better job with the gear ratios? Does the newer fuel injection do a better job on surging with dual spark? Is there that much more power in an 1150RT? I know the hydraulic clutch is very nice. One other question, is the headlight that muvh better on an 1150? It sure does look alot better. Does it have additional riding lights on it as well or is it just a std low/high beam? Sorry but I have alot of questions. Still debating on LT vs RT but I figured I needed more info about the differences in the 100 to the 1150.

I had a 2003 single spark R1150RT that I just traded for an R1200RT. If you can spend a little more than 10k, I would go with a 2005 R1200RT. They have fixed the surging; the bike has more power and is lighter; the headlight is better; the clock is "fixed"; and the seat, in my opinion, is better than the 1150.

If you can't do that, then a 2004 dual spark would also be an OK choice. The 2002-2005 (they made 250 R1150RTs in 2005) had additional "fog" lamps built into the headlight. After a few careful tunings, even my single spark 2003 did not surge (well, a very small amount).

Take a look at www.bmwrt.com or www.cycletrader.com for used RTs.

Thanks, I am pretty commited to the 10k price limit otherwise I would hop on a R1200RT no questions. i have heard only good things about that bike. I am steering back toward an LT since the guys on the LT side are saying the problems dont occure as much as it may seem from the site and since the final drive issues are with all the BMW models and not just the LT. No doubt that the weight may make a LT's final drive have the problem occur sooner.
