a quick question ...if I remove the oil filter cover to do a thread repair, I'm thinking I'll only loose the oil contained in the filter sump. I just changed the oil and would hate to loose it all.
Can't be more than 1/2 litre in there?
Thanks

Nope, you lose it all. Many of us do not bother using the drain plug. We unbolt the cover, let it drain, replace filter, install cover and refill. My drain plug hasn't been out in 4 years.

You will actually lose all except what is in the filter.

If you want to save the fresh oil, just drain into a clean pan and then pour it back in. Or just put in new oil, as it's relatively cheap.

If you only have one thread to repair...it may be possible to just take one screw out and repair it with the cover in place. Two screws, properly torqued, should keep the oil from leaking out. This is if you only need to run a tap through...if you need to do a helicoil it won't help you.
