Hey, Adam. Sounds like a great trip. I don't really have anything to add to what has been posted in the main thread, but I'll throw in a +1 for Rt. 17 in Canada over the Lakes, the Adirondaks (although there might be lots of traffic in August), and as much time as you can spare in the White Mountains. Looking forward to hearing about the trip.

Just a heads up for your while traveling 17 through NY State - the police are REALLY policing this road from RTE 81 to RTE 84. MANY speeding tickets being given out through that stretch that I'm aware of.
Other than that it sounds like your route suggestions have all be darn good ones. Enjoy the ride!

Adam,
Your 2nd route in NY is better to a point, Blue Mt., then go north on 30, east on 3 thru Lake Placid (home of 2 of the world olimpics held in the U S. 1932 & 1980. That is where all of the high mts are in N Y. The southern adks have smaller mts. Mt. Marcyi is the highest at around 52-5300 feet. You can ride up the back side of Whiteface Mt. where the skiing took place.

El bumpo.
Roads for Vermont and New Hampshire are also welcome. We've tentatively set aside one day for each state, and prob 2 for NY. So let's hear about those 5 star roads!
Thanks,
