I moved the shifter up and then realized I liked it more in the stock position. It was much easier to downshift in the old position than in a higher position .Does anyone know if there is a way other than experimentation to determine what that position is? Thanks.

I'll give it a shot. I just replaced my shift lever with the Touratec adjustable model. I took note of the alignment of the stock shifter to help me align the new one. The stock shifter was parallel with the edge of the fairing just below the shifter hope this helps.
Also, take a look at this site and it shows a picture of the Touratec shifter that will help with your alignment.

Haven't adjusted mine, BUT.... I thought, as you apparently did, that I needed to raise the shifter to make it easier to get my toe under it. But some helpful soul on this site offered the simpler suggestion of shifting up with the edge of the sole of my boot. It works great and my shifter is right where I need it now... without adjustment. :D

Thanks. I have since found out there is a line to line up for the stock position.
