Hi Dan.

Not involved in "Stereo Potography" , is that the study of musical Pots? :histerica (sorry couldn't resist... and will have to be very careful with my spelling!)

Am involved in 3D stereography for motion pictures (digital animation actually), and currently trying to find the cheapest & best (sub $100k) system to update our stereo rig at work. All good fun!

The topics are closely related though, and there's a lot of excellent online resources for stereo photography, stereo viewers and the like. The roots of cinema are grounded in stills photography.

Stereo displays are now available for home use (as in TV's) although still at the bleeding edge of new technology.

I can point you to an excellent resource on the history of stereography in cinema, by Lenny Lipton, founder of the RealD system that is used at a number of 3D movie theatres.

He also has a blog which makes for interesting reading...

Enjoy you're new hobby!

You can even take stereo pictures with a digital camera. Just take one picture then move sideways a bit and take another. Put both pictures side by side on your computer and then you have to look cross-eyed at them until the superimpose. Now they look 3-D.
It's a trick I learned from one of Phil Askey's (of dpreview.com) CDs. He even has used it photographing mountains from onboard a jet. He just takes two pictures in quick succession and the 3-D effect is amazing!
