View Full Version : Cheek Pads too tight

I tried on two helmets at the International Motorcycle show and loved them both. Determined which size I needed and ordered them. I got the Shoei Multitech and love it and it fits perfectly, but I also got the new carbon HJC AC-12. At the show it felt great, but mine is too tight through the cheek pads. My first thought was I'll just jump in and buy thinner cheek pads, well turns out they don't make thinner ones. Anyone have any suggestions, cause I sent the helmet to J&M for an install so I am stuck with the helmet? Other than the cheek pad pressing in to my face I love the helmet and the weight is incredible. So, any ideas?

I guess you've talked to the HJC folks about this? Their website sez: (Removable interiors are available in models: AC-10, AC-11, AC-12, AC-2M, AC-3, CL-SP, CL-14, CL-15, Sy-Max, CL-Max, AC-X1, AC-X2, AC-X3, CL-X4, CL-X5, CS-X4, and CS-X2). Based on that, I would have figgered they have different pads, butt what do I know!!

Same complaint here. I finally decided to bite the bullet and spend $650 on lower cords and J&M Elite headsets so I could use the CommSystem on my '03. Pulled our 3/4 HJC's out of storage to install the headsets. Guess my cheeks grew a little in the 2 years since I last used it. Cheek pads were tight then but now, ouch.
So, I bought 1/2" and 3/4" foam from the fabric store.
Then I removed the pad assemblies from the helmet, cut the stitching half way around the pad covers with an Exacto knife, pulled the original foam pads out, cut the new foam to shape using the original pads as a template, tried both new thickness foam, picked the thickness I liked, slipped them into the pad covers and then glued the pad fabric edges where I cut the stitching with super glue.
Now I love it.

Dick,
HJC says they have pads, but when you look at their chart it is only size differences for the different size helmets. They don't have different thicknesses like the Arai or Shoie pads.
Tony,
We are only talking about an exacto knife and Super Glue...how much damage could I do?............. ..............Okay...okay, I'm steping away from the tool box. Damn!!!

Pads out - flat on a smooth hard surface - Thor on standby - BFH in hand.
You want 'em one-whack thinner, or two-whacks thinner?!! :p

Jerry.. I think there may be some way of reducing the "cheek pad" foam. One method is to place a damp cotton facecloth to the inside where it's "tight" and use an iron to "compress" with heat. The damp cloth will transmit heat and pressure and you will minimize possible melting of the fabric.
Of course, Dick's idea has merit...

You sure about this iron thing? Sounds good to me and an iron isn't really like a tool at all....is it? ;)
I wondered about putting something heavy on them for a couple of weeks, but I can see were the iron would shrink the foam. I just don't want to end up having to buy new ones and hearing about it from the better half.

Hmm.. okay, if your lovely bride complains, do NOT offer to iron her underwear. see, really simple..... okay, not so bright, but simple.
Besides, you don't REALLY have to admit to knowing how to use the iron...
I can't promise the iron deal will work, even tho it has worked for me before. Instead of a "household" iron, I had a small one for R/C airplane covering... it was about 1.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches long... like this http://www.monokote.com/accys/topr2100.html
