Continuing Motorcycle Education

I have an opportunity to ask for money from the state (grant) for motorcycle safety. My idea is to get about 15k and advertise "free" experience ride course. The DOT of Florida and my department would be sponsors. We would advertise the course and hand out t-shirt. Run a class about one month for a year.

Good idea???

What other ideas are out there about motorcycle safety that you wish a state would implement???

Is this with the MSF? If so, I would expect them to have plenty of resources to assist with setting something like this up. I know here in Illinois the State pays for the MSF program out of tax dollars. Individuals pay a refundable deposit of $20 to secure a spot in a class.

If not MSF, are you talking about starting a training organization from scratch? David Hough describes an experienced rider course of his own design in one of this books (sorry, don't remember which one!), maybe his materials could give you some ideas. I seem to recall his outline being significantly different than what the MSF offers. Just food for thought.

The Police backed system over here is known as Bikesafe. Here (http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/Bikesafe/Bikesafe2000/NYorks.html) gives some details of the outline. Someone mentioned that it has been imported to the staes(NC I believe). The concept and proof is there and has been proven.

Yes, this would be through MSF, because they already have places for classroom and range, so there would be no cost to build, plus some insurance company will give discounts if you take a safety class.

Already tried that here and was laughed at. Well, not physically but I got this from are risk management office, "You want to do what??????"' no other department does that. And it boils down to "liability". When we do the toys of tots ride, the sponsor has to come up with a 1 million dollar insurance, before we can escort.

not sure how close you work with MSF but you may want to contact them. Just went to a MSF national update Sunday and MSF has some programs in the pipeline. They may allow you to be a testing site. I believe the program was ERC Suite. Also briefly touched on a "Sport Bike" version. These where discussed very little at this update so I can't expand on any more details.

I would not describe Bikesafe as a training course it is an assessed ride with the idea that an experienced police rider will give you a route to follow and ride behind and watch how you behave. You ride at your pace. When you stop he will debrief you and give some pointers then you go off again. At the end of the ride it is hoped that your bad habits will have been pointed out and you will have been encouraged to look at further training.

I like that, makes a lot of sense. You got my wheels thinking. Thank you for this information, I have just made contact with the NC Highway and waiting for a call back with the guy who is in charge. Will keep all updated.
