Anyone have an iPod (latest version) that they can check something out for me? Does it take a 2.5 mm stereo pin for the headseat/audio out or is it 3.5 mm?

TIA,

I've got a 40G Photo, and I've looked through about everything and can't find the size. The pin itself is a 3mm diameter, according to my handy calipers.

Whoops, correction it is 3.5mm diameter. Needed me cheaters! I've got a set that came with my Ipod that I don't use, if you need them.

Aha. Thanks. That really helps. Now I can order the iPOD.

Which one to get? http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif There are so many of them out there.

I've got a 20G and a 40G Photo. The photo is pretty cool if you like to show off your pictures. Both have about 1500 songs, and plenty of room to spare.
The good news is they just keep getting cheaper. Now even most phones are doubling as mp3 players!
Soon, we will all just wear a chip imbedded into an ear canal that will handle all contact with the outside world.
Have a great Holiday.

I have an older one, and a buddy just got the new one that does video. The clarity of the video stuff he showed me was pretty amazing. But I think it's some special format that you can only download from iTunes right now. Still.. pretty cool if you're into taking your TV shows with you.

For now, my older 40G unit that just does music and serves as a file-transporter works for me.

which one you get depends on what you want to use it for. i've got an older 15-gig model that holds all my songs and works great. i run it through an FM modulator when i'm on a trip.

my wife has an shuffle that she listens to on her morning commute on BART. the battery on those things last forever (since it's solid state).

my boss just bought an iPod mini that he got for a song ... seems there are fire sales on 'em.

if you just want a repository for your road tunes that you can plumb into your stereo then i think i'd opt for a closeout price on an older iPod. if you want to watch video downloads you will, if course, have to get the newer one. but for just casual listening it is tough to beat the shuffle. it is tiny and hangs from a string around your neck, and the one-gig version holds a bunch of songs. the downside is it has no display, but i sorta like the random play function. acts like radio programming where you don't know which song will come up next.

Thanks Gerhard.

considering that none of my bikes have radios, I will be basically piping the tunes from the iPod to the Baehr Verso XL unit.

I might opt and buy the FM modulator for when I am in the truck or mini van. the shuffle is an option. A basic iPod seems to be the way to go. one with the upgraded battery since I won't be powering it up from the bikes. I guess that would mean the newer (2nd and up?) generation ones.

Raffy,

The iPod Photo can be used to download your digital photos from your camera while you are on the road, no need to carry a laptop. Pretty handy.:D

The video iPods are pretty cool, and the Photo iPods are useful for dumping down your pictures while on the road. But as a music source on the bike, any iPod will do fine. All will store and play your music flawlessly.

None are waterproof, so you'll have to figure out the mounting. A useful item is an RF remote that works wirelessly, so you can tuck the iPod safely away, but still have play/pause, forward/back, and volume control. Just put the remote in a tank bag or stick it to the handlebars and you're good to go.

Unless you need the video or photo features (or don't care about cost), your choice boils down to how much storage do you need versus how much can you spend.

My wife has an original 5 Gig iPod, and is always shuffling music around to make things fit. I have a 20 Gig that lives in my LT, but my music and audiobook collection is about twice that size so I have to choose what to bring with. The video ipods are cool, but new and therefore pricey.

Older iPods can be had for some great deals, sometimes even still new in the box if you look around a bit.
