I have been doing this for a while and get a fair amount more gear in when campingI use to remove mine when traveling for more room. Now I just pull a Bushtec Trailer. It has all the room I need plus more. But there is more room in the top case ( boot) without it in.

I run mine without the carpet when I'm using the top case and find that it does give me (or my wife I should say) more room, plus it makes it easier to latch the case. :)

Around town - carpet (liner) in.

Long distance - carpet (liner) out.

I like the results in both configurations. Around town, I put my helmet in it when I park.

Long distance - it holds a lot more crap.
