I've read this forum and about many problems with final drives. Can anyone tell me if the final drive on the 2007 LT is improved, or should I expect to see problems.
Is synthetic or regular gear oil the best to use?
tks to those who respond.

This is a very controversial subject. The '99 - '02 have had the highest failure rate. In '03 BMW introduced a 17 ball replacement bearing. It seemed to help. In '05 they came out with a redesigned 19 ball unit from a different supplier.

To the best of our knowledge, the newer 19 is doing okay. That is what you have in your '07.

Regarding oil...use what your owners manual sez...GL-5. Everyone will argue whether to use Dino or synthetic, and/or what brand. Your call.

Use whatever your book tells you to stay covered by your warranty. And, change the FD fluid when you change your engine oil...Every 6,000 miles.
Look for flakes, not sludge, FLAKES or CHIPS on the magnet.

You will probably be okay. Most are. Just ride it, enjoy it, but, keep an eye on it!!

I have 70,000 on my '02 with a 17 ball bearing...knock on wood!!

What I heard when I bought my LT was that the replacement bearing was introduced for the "late" 02s, don't remember which month. Part of the reason I went with the 03.

I don't worry about it. Just ride it. :D

I am running BMW recommended viscosity and type by ******. Delaer changed at 600. I changed at 1600 then at the 3k... the first 6k, and every 6 since.

When bike was under 600 miles, I took it out to "break it in".... I got it hot enough to have some oil come out the vent line... interesting.. I took it to the dealer who said... "sometimes they overfill at factory".. oh.... ok... "don't worry about it unless it happens again." oh.... ok.. afterward, when I drained at 1600 the correct volume came out.... so it appears the dealer put in correct volume.. (thanks Lonestar).

The journey continues..
