I have a short of some kind in my radio control unit that comes and goes. It makes the sound like the speakers are blown. I purchased new speaker thinking that was the problem but the static was still there. After I tap the unit the static goes away but comes back later. I hope I don't have to buy an new control unit because that could cost me over $700 bucks  Does anyone know a web site that can show me how to take the unit out so I can see if a wire is loose or the unit needs to be cleaned.

This is not an uncommon issue. Most of the time, the cure is simply to remove the Tupperware and the 'stingray' (the plastic around the RCU) and clean all of the connectors. Then, use dielectric grease on all of the connectors as you put everything back together. Anytime I work on my bikes, I reapply dielectric grease to every connector that I see.

Unfortuanely, you will have to strip all of the tupperware off of the bike to get to the wiring.
You can find the directions with pictures to strip the plastic attached to this post. It was created sometime ago by another board member. I printed the each page on card stock and I'm planning on laminating it to give it a little bit of protection.
A html based version can be found here:

A great chart for the location of all the screws can be found here:

It took a total clod like me 5 hours the first time I stripped her down and then reinstalled everything. The second go round, I competed it in under four hours.

I had the same thing happening on my 02 with the rear speakers. When I took all of the tupperware off for the 24k service I found a wire bundle that snakes up the left side of the tank and ends in the round connector was chaffed through from rubbing on some of the metal framework and shorting out. I wrapped the wires and then wrapped the bundle in some spiralwrap and secured the bundle better when I put it all back together. No more problem.

I think I bought my new radio from Chiago BMW for around 500.
I didn't have an easy fix... :(
But now XM sounds great.
