Customized Data Fields ... Anyone?

While combing through the manual of my new-to-me Garmin 2820, I see that the screens are somewhat customizable. I've been playing with this a little, and I think I like what I've come up with. I have recaptured some of my screen back that Garmin chose to use for text, whereas my settings use it for map detail. I like that more. Also, whether I'm using the GPS for navigating, or it's just turned on but not navigating, my Speed and Time are always in the same fields, and up closer to my line-of-sight. I like this too.


You'll notice there's no GREEN section on my customized screens. Also, my Zoom IN and Zoom Out buttons are closer to the top of the screen, making them easier to hit with gloves on.

I like what I see! Nice job I have been playing around with my Nuvi trying to get real familiar with it, so it is easier to operate on the bike.

Unfortunately for some, not all Garmin units have customizable data fields. Spoke with a buddy last night that has a Nuvi 360, and his does not. Bummer. I really like having a bigger map portion of the screen.

Glad you like the look. I've been using the GPS this way for a couple of days and like it way mo' better! :)

Learning how to manipulate the data fields took me a little bit of practice. Kinda goofy the way they have it setup. I'll post pics of my data field settings later on.

This should make things a little easier. That is, if you have a 2820 or the like...


Go to the Main Menu and select 'Settings'.

Then press the down arrow for the next page down.

You can configure your screen however you'd like, obviously.
Once I was done, this is how my Navigation Data Fields settings looked.

The first time I tried getting 'Speed' up in the top field, this is the way the screen was configured. Yuk! I didn't want to share that top field with 3 lines of information, so I had to change it. Press the + sign.

Now there's two lines of data ... press the + sign again.

There, that's better! 3/3 means that you only have 1 line of data in that field. You can experiment to see what you like. IMO, anymore than more line of data and the information becomes too hard to read at a quick glance.

Luv what you did to the screen..........been toying between a 2820 & a Zumo and after all the input from this wonderful site I'm going to get a 2820.
When it arrives I'll be back to pick your brains for a little help in getting it set-up.

Well don't know how to display my setting like Joe did.
But using multiple items in my nav settings.
1. speed, heading and time
2. dist to turn and time to turn
3. next turn
4. arrival dist and arrival time

My non nav settings are less crowded.
1. just speed
2. just heading
3. just time
4. just Elev. ft

I will experiment tomorrow to better understand how these settings affect what is displayed on the screen. I think that your 200ft setting is too low. I'll report back later on tomorrow.

Also, are you certain that under 'Detailed Maps', that your latest version is 'enabled'? That's something you may want to check.

I keep my 2610 at 800ft zoom. It will still do the close ups of any turns.
A question for Joe - With the bluetooth working through the 2820, is it possible to shut off "bitching Betty" and still retain the volume for your cell phone?

The volume control on the 2820 is a Master volume control. If you press the 'Advanced' tab, another screen pops up with FOUR volume controls. Nice! :) One for voice prompts, for XM, the mp3 player, and your cell phone. So one can easily mute voice prompts, meanwhile leaving the cell volume at a normal setting.

I thought that was real smart thinkin' by the Garmin folks. :cool:

I found that tidbit when I was testing the Bluetooth on my bike. I had my wife call my cell and the ringing in the headset just about blew my eardrums out! :wow: I hurried to adjust the volume and I saw the 'Advanced' tab. Imagine my surprise... ;)

You need to either increase this setting, or put it on 'Auto' (which is the default setting). When I changed mine to "200ft", most if not all of my secondary road names disappeared. Not good.
