Just a heads-up for some of you newer Garmin customers. If your GPS didn't come with the latest & greatest maps (Map Update 2008 City Navigator® North America NT), you just might be eligible for a free update. If you haven't registered your GPS yet, click here to go to myGarmin (https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces) and register. Then you can see if you're eligible for any free updates.
I did this today and found out that I am eligible. Just saved myself $60! :)

Thanks, I checked. Mine says it's version 8 purchased Oct 2007, is that the update? When I go online to MyGARMIN it says $69.95 for 2008 update.

Kevin,
The new update is aka "ver 9". Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you are eligible. But don't pay their retail price. Currently, this eBay seller (http://cgi.ebay.com/Garmin-Map-Update-2008-City-Navigator-NT-North-America_W0QQitemZ290205243804) is the cheapest I've found at just $57.98 to your door. Not too shabby.
HTH...

Okay...in your opinion is the update worth the money? What's new?I haven't received my update yet, so I really can't say for sure. But what I can tell you is that, I have lived through version 5, ver6, ver7, and ver8 . . . and each update had more useful information than the previous version.
I personally don't think $57.98 is too much to ask for. I'm glad I'm getting this update for free, but next year you can bet that I'll be dishing out for the 2009 (ver10) update. :)

You can have a preview of City Navigator 2008 North America NT on this page (http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavnt.jsp#). In the right upper corner you see a box 'MapSource Map Viewer'. Click on 'City Navigator North America NT' (disable pop-up blockers). You can zoom in.

The old nomenclature was V7,,, V8,,, Now the most recent City Navigator is 2008. The next update will be CN- 2009.

Okay...in your opinion is the update worth the money? What's new? There are some new roads in my home town that have been added since my last update. I have been directed onto roads that have turned to gravel a few miles down the road, too. And hopefully the restaurant db is better. While on the road in strange towns, and feeling hungry, I have ridden to lots of restaurants that had been closed for a long time.

I have had the Zumo for 2 years, so would have to buy the update, I looked at some of the eBay ads and they are usually for "opened and in good condition...."
If the update has already been applied to another unit, would it work ?, I suspect not. Worth the $ 10 saving ?

I don't work for Garmin, but I'll answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.
I have had the Zumo for 2 years, so would have to buy the update...If the unit was ever registered with Garmin, then yes, definitely.
I looked at some of the eBay ads and they are usually for "opened and in good condition...."Again, this still depends whether or not the unit was ever registered with Garmin. Unless you're talking about a software upgrade. If it's been used, I believe that it has been unlocked and therefore it won't work on another unit. That would suck.
If the update has already been applied to another unit, would it work ? No. The latest update (2008) only works for ONE unit.
Worth the $ 10 saving ? I don't know what you mean by "Worth the $ 10 saving". Please expound.

I mean that buying the new, unopened update is typically in the range of $ 10 over some of the prices on eBay, etc. The risk of buying and then finding it does not work, is not worth the $ 10 savings..

Both of my Garmin units were purchased in 2007. One in Jan and the other in June. Garmin emailed me telling me I was eligible for updates for both. I applied online and received them both in the mail. I was pretty shocked that the January one still was eligible!
Not that I need the NA maps any time soon. . . The wife and I probably won't be returning to the States until 2014.

Well, the two cheapest sellers on eBay are both authorized Garmin dealers, so I don't think that's a concern. Then again, I'm an eBay'er from way back. ;)
