Back in 2000 I was riding an 86 Goldwing, the thirtieth bike I have owned when I saw a magazine article about the BMW K1200LT. I was smitten, but have always had an agreement with my wife that I could have toys as long as I didn't buy them on credit. In June of 2001 I found a K1200LT for sale online in Columbia SC. Made a visit, made an offer and brought it home.
At the time we had a tiny BMW motorcycle dealership here in Myrtle Beach that did a big business in personal watercraft. I took it in for service and was less than pleased with the work they did on the bike. In an effort to learn about the bike I stumbled on the original K1200LT Yahoo board. At the time you could find out ANYTHING about the bike on this forum. Little did I know that we can learn even more that Grif, Mark Neblett and Randy Prade knew back then. Around this time of the year back in 2002 I saw a posting on the board for the Curve Cowboy Reunion in Sante Fe NM in August. Knowing full well that I could not take a week to ten days off and travel 5,000 miles plus to go meet these folks, I sent my registration in anyway as a token of appreciation for all I had learned from these folks. Turns out that registration worked on my like a bad toothache. I simply couldn't get it out of my mind. My wife finally told me that she would give me permission if I would just quit talking about it. Since then I have only missed one CCR to attend the wedding of my neice just prior to the expected death of her dad, my brother in law.
I am not a group rider, never have been, probably never will be and yet I enjoy the company of other riders. CCR has allowed me to visit some of the most beautiful riding areas in the US and in the company of fellow riders.
For those who have never attended a CCR, the good ole boy relationships on this board might be a bit intimidating. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Before I had my helmut off in Sante Fe, Denny from Wyoming was talking to me like a brother, we're still buds though he has moved on to another marque. After checking in I went to get dinner and when I walked in to the dining room alone was invited to eat with bustedknuckles, Jimbo and Sheryl, most hospitable folks from Texas who I enjoy seeing each year at CCR. The point I make is that there are no outsiders at CCR and if you meet an "old timer" it just means they will be able to introduce you to more folks.
If you haven't registered for Zermatt yet, get on with it, I can assure you that a good time will be had by ALL.
