Check out the VISEC SW... turns your pc and a camera into security SW. The cool part is you can set "activity" levels from individual cameras (nice so that the waving flag doesn't trigger recording).
You can also have video emailed to you or see it remotely.

Been using a linux proggy called 'Motion' (http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome) to do something similar with just a single camera in the office. Not quite as sophisticated. But it does have real time web access and with a shell script, I've got my own 'alerter' working too.
Been working with 'Zone Minder' (http://www.zoneminder.com/) for the more sophisticated motion detection, recording, alerting, etc duties. That's what'll soon be running here at the house. I like how you can select and then rate areas of the field of view for differences. Makes it possible to ignore that branch out the window that's constantly being moved by the wind or the neighbors cat that's so often in the yard - but still catch and record the twit swipe'n your trash can from the driveway.
This is pretty cool stuff and a GREAT application for inexpensive USB cams! (and did I mention the software is available freely?)
