View Full Version : Question About Adding Horn To 1150gs

I'm sure I'm not the first to want to replace the wimpy stock horn on the R1150GS. I picked up one of those miniature air horns, made by WOLO mfg co yesterday. Now I'm trying to find an inconspicuous place to mount it. I'm finding that unlike the LT this bike doesn't have a lot of places to mount after market "stuff". So, wondering if any of ya'll have any suggestions as to where I might be able to mount this thing so it looks decent and doesn't interfere with the movement of the front forks, etc.

Lynn,
On my GSA1150 I removed the stock horn and took a small 1" wide strap of steel and "made" a bracket that held the STebel horn. It just fit. I used the stock wiring and it worked very good.
Just be sure to check the clearances at full steering lock.

Thanks David. That was my original thought but it looks awful tight up in that area. I'll have to take another look tomorrow. Also, the OEM horn wiring looks a little on the light side. Thought I'd use that circuit to trigger a relay and run the horn power through the relay with a larger fused line straight off the battery.

Here is how I did it (http://davedragon.rilysi.com/2007/02/installed-stebel-139db-12-volt-air-horn.html).
Not a lot of options.

Thanks Dave, that's one of the areas I was looking at. Was just wondering if there wasn't something with a little better weather protection.

Adventurers Workshop sells a Stebel Nautilus Air Horn Installation Kit (http://www.adventurersworkshop.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=AWI&Category_Code=STEBEL_HORNS) for the R1150GS. This is a heavy duty bracket and it is priced at $25.00. Your Wolo looks like a rebadged Stebel or vis versa. There is a good picture of the Stebel Nautilus on their site so you can compare them yourself.
I used their kit for the R1200GS to mount my Stebel Nautilus.
Update:
While the two horns look physically similar the loudness specs on the two products are quite different. So I guess I am not too confident that their physical characteristics are similar enough for the brackets from Adventures Workshop to be of any use. You could e-mail them and see if anyone has used their bracket to mount the Wolo.
Interestingly enough the sound output of the Stebel is rated at 139 dB while the Wolo is 118 dB. That means the Stebel is 21 dB or 11.2 times louder. I can beleive it because even I jump when I press my horn button :histerica.

Was just wondering if there wasn't something with a little better weather protection.I have visions of a GS laying on it's side in 2 feet of water. I'm guessin' any placement would be bad at that point. ;)

OK, I know you guys, and you know who you are, think your FUNNY, but you should know that "I HAVE FEELINGS!".:histerica
Anyway, just to close the book, I took another look at installing the new horn in the area originally occupied by the OEM device. With a little effort and a simple custom bracket it did fit in that space with ample clearance. While, as someone pointed out, it's not quite as loud as the Stebel however it's plenty loud and it definitely will get your attention.
Thanks to all for the information and suggestions.
