I am planning an Alaska ride in June and was wondering if anyone else had simlar plans, she who must be obeyed would feel beter if I rode with a partner.
I will be starting from Livermore Ca. and can meet up along the way.
Everything is still in the planning stages so wide open to dates and routes, prefer early start to avoid some of the RV's.
PM me if interested.
Just Bob.

I'm planning 45 days to 2 months at tis time but am flexible. I will be camping most of the time. Going alone at this time so if you want to join up for part or all we should talk.

Bumped into Bob in Prince George, British Columbia where I was working/not riding, boo hoo, as he pulled into the Travelodge for the evening, March 17th. He said the trip was going well and he departed the next day towards Stewart/Hyder crossing. His timing with the weather was perfect. Till this last weekend it really felt like spring had not kicked into gear and snow flurries were the norm. This weekend and moving forward, high seventies to low eighties and of course you have to throw in scattered showers. Good luck Bob and take some time to smell the flowers as they say. Hi Mike, it was good meeting you, too bad you had to work, the ride to Hyder and then to Watson Lake was fantastic. Unfortunately the leg to Haines junction ended in Whitehorse with a get off on a round about in downtown Whitehorse, whick led to a broken ankle. So the trip ends here. I will be flying out this afternoon, and will see to the bike later. The bike only has a dent in the left saddle bag and a un-diagnosed starting issue. I have more new friends here in Whitehorse and I could not have asked for better help. A local family took me in, The Murray's, Mom Anna rides and was behind me when I went down, she took this stray home after the hospital and fed me and put me to bed. No smart remarks here...grin. Her son was driving me around to check on the bike and even picked up my prescriptions.
Well, will talk to you later,
Will be back to complete this trip another year,
Just Bob.

Bob, sorry to hear about your incident, but glad that it was not any more serious than it turned out to be. That said lets hope that it heals well and has not broken your spirit for adventure. The dent in the bike just lends to it's character and confirms your re-telling of the story. It's always amazing in this world with all the crap going on how many good people are out there and how you meet them just at the right time. I would keep smiling and dreaming about about the second half of your journey you have left to complete. It's like reading half of a really good book. Enough said. If that bike ends up in Alberta, let me know. I have a trailor and can pick it up and store it in my garage indefiantely if that helps.

Bob,
Don't want to hijack your thread, but I have a question...
I noticed you traded at LT for a GS.. Right now I have both.. (older 97 GS)
I have been contemplating trading both for a newer GS..
Do you miss the LT? Obviously you are content w/ the GS for long trips (Alaska) My 97 has little wind protection, no heated seat, no throttle lock or cruise, no radio, less comfortable seat etc..
I would love to go to Alaska someday. (Next 10 years) I love the LT for any paved road. The twistier the better. However, thinking about Alaska..
I know I'll get there, see all the fantastic gravel roads going up into the Mtns, and wish I was on the GS.
I was thinking about riding the LT up there, and then renting a GS.. I don't know. Just curious about your thoughts. You can PM me back if you want.
Sorry about the rambling message..
Thanks,
Jeff

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Has your foot healed and have you gone back up yet to get your bike? I went up to Prudhoe Bay last year with some friends and one of them went down in Chicken Alaska on a muddy road. Thought he broke his ankle but ended up being sprained. He was on a Goldwing and even though he drove it back to Austin the bike ended up being totaled. We finished the trip from Austin to Prudhoe in 28 days. Excellent trip. I also have a LT and a 1150GS. I rode the GS on this trip. I have ridden to Alaska twice now. 1st time on a Goldwing in 98. This time on the GS and I was just as comfortable after buying a few things for it like a Aeroflow windshield and a cruise control. I also took the GS to Mexico last fall. Its a go anywhere and do anything kinda bike. Sure hope you can get back to Whitehorse and finish your trip.

Hi bthomp897, Foot is healing and I will be on crutches till mid-Aug. They put in a screw to hold two bones together to let the tendons heal. Picked up my bike from Edmonton last week, so it is now home safe and sound. Yes, I am planning on completing my Alaska adventure asap!!!!

Hi Jeff, I don't miss the LT, but then again, I added a cruise control, custom seat, XM radio and com. system to my Adventure. The wind protection on the Adventure is perfect for me. I found riding accross the US on the LT that the barn door size windshield on the LT was just too much in the heat. The range on the Adventure gas tank is great, just enough distance for pee breakes....grin. Rode the GSA to Keywest FL. and back in March, had no issues.

I am planning a trip for summer of '09. My better half says I can't go alone, although I will if my buddies keep crapping out (wimps, the lot of them). Sorry to hear about your mishap, Quick advice, there is a great forum advrider.com where you can get a ton of information about adventure touring. They live for this stuff. Quick question - sounds like your bags faired pretty well, what brand are they?
Hoping for '09

Hello Bob I was reading your thread please could you give me some more details on your cruse control for the GS.. As I have good friends in the USA who could bring it down to me here in Argentina.. Dose it take a NASA tech to put it on or just a good electric mechanic.
Good luck on your Alaska trip.. One day Ride down to Argentina we have real nice rides here.. SAFE and cheap!!! TKS You can rent GS GSA locally.. :bmw:

Hi Fireboy121, I have the BMW adventure bags, they have been through several crashes and pretty much survived them. If I had to do over again, I would buy the Jessey Safari or the Micatech, I have looked at them and they are built better. The mounting on the BMW does no lend itself to field repair either.
My two cents anyway.

Hi ELPAMPERO, the cruise I got was from
http://www.mccruise.com/shop/home.php?xid=eb366eaeaa45d2b2dda4c0b5bc35d616
They have online instructions for you to look at, so you know what you are getting into. I did not have any issue installing mine, but for others might be a task, the throttle splitter was the thing that took the most figuring out to accomplish. They are from Australia, so would probably be cheaper then getting it sent to the states and then to you. I tworks just like a car cruise control, don't forget to calibrate it after installation, makes a bunch a differance in the operation.
Would like to take you up on that offer of Argentina, maybe in the next year or two or three....grin. Have to complete my Alaska trip first.
Just Bob.

Thanks for the review of the bags - I think I've settled on the Micatechs... only problem now is to buy the bike for the bags!
I know... Priorities!
If I have the bags though, then I can justify the bike purchase to the warden...

For my Alaska Trip, I had decided on leaving mid-May, I am glad I did. Weather was cool, and mostly dry, low traffic and accommodations were open. After reading from the Adventure Rider forum about the rain, mosquitos and the RV's later this June that other riders experienced. I will be completing my Alaska trip I again again in Mid-May, the next time I can take a month off again.
