Just added is the Spot Personal Messenger / Tracker (http://www.cyclenutz.com/products/misc_stuff/spot_satellite_personal_tracker.html).

This handy device uses satellite communication to help you track your route, check in with a friend or loved one, or call for help in the event of an emergency. Since it uses satellite communictions you don't have to rely on being able to get cell phone reception which we call know can be very spotty in remote locations.

Nice!

What will the Monthly Service set you back?

Right now Annual Service is $99 and if you want the tracking ability it's another $49 for the year. This is direct from www.findmespot.com and not us resellers..

They are currently working on other plans and more features and will have them implemented by the 2nd quarter.

There is a good thread over at ADVrider that started when the first units were made available and is being updates as more and more people use it.

I've used cell phone based tracking in the past and not having to rely on cellular reception is a HUGE improvement.

Several LD riders are using this and are relatively pleased with it. There are a few software features that are not yet implemented, but the main company is improving things all the time. And compared to the previous generation of satellite trackers, this one is a good price for its feature set.

I think what they are finding is that they designed the device, based on a market study, to have certain features and come in at a certain price point. Now that the unit is gaining popularity there are other markets that they did not foresee it being used in and they are getting requests for added features.

That's why I like this company so much. I've talked/emailed with my sales rep and tech's about things that I think the motorcycle industry would like to see and they are very open to new features. Some are planned by the start of the first quarter while some are being considered for a higher end model (at least one year out). At least they are listening..

The SPOT Personal messenger / tracker (http://www.cyclenutz.com/products/misc_stuff/spot_satellite_personal_tracker.html) has been getting more press lateley..

It was in a few magazines:

SPOT- Editors' Choice Awards/Review (http://www.cyclenutz.com/documents/reviews/spot/backpacker_mag_april08.pdf)
Backpacker Mag. April 08

SPOT Review - What's Next Now (http://www.cyclenutz.com/documents/reviews/spot/boating_magazine_march08.pdf)
Boating Mag. March 08

A Personal Beacon with Extra Features (http://www.cyclenutz.com/documents/reviews/spot/good_old_boat_march_april08.pdf)
Good Old Boat Mag. Mar/Apr 08

And just recently there was a kayaker was rescued off the west coast of Tasmania (http://onkayaks.squarespace.com/journal/2008/3/6/thursday-march-6th-2008-spot.html) near the Pieman River after pressing the 911 button on his SPOT.

They have also added:

Language Settings
Time Zone Settings
International Address Support
Recovery of your user ID and password
Naming of your first messenger profile
Enhanced Emergency Contact Information
Google Terrain Maps
Message Export in KML, GPX, and CSV

Also, the latest word on the guest login is that it's two weeks out so keep your eyes peeled..

It's good to see they are listening to customers and actively supporting/updating the features of the unit.

I recently purchased a SPOT unit, and have just used it on a 3-day ride up the Nor Cal coast. Every "ok" message I sent was transmitted to my wife's cell-phone and to my email account (that's how I have my account set-up). I was in some fairly remote places. Only one message was delayed -- it came in two days late, all the rest were timely.

It definately helps add peace of mind for SO's.

I know a lot of people have been waiting for the guest login so that the tracking feature can be used by more folks..
