The standout below is Mark O'Connor. He's considered a virtuoso on the violin and the piano. Guitar is not where he shines brightest, but man, he rips it.
Mark O'Connor, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and Sam Bush as "Strength in Numbers". The two tracks below can be found on a very fine album called "Telluride Sessions".

Oh man, Blue Men of the Sahara positively smokes. Hey Mark, good to see another bluegrass (newgrass?) fan here. I've been a big fan of all those guys for a long time, but didn't know about this album. Click. My copy will now arrive in two days, thanks to you and Amazon. :D
Piece of trivia. The founder of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival rides an LT and is a member of this site. True story. Know who it is?
Cheers,
-joel

Reminds me of Alan Stivell - a Breton 'Folk' musician, and . . . Bretons (from Brittany in NW France) are Celts (as in Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) and the Celts were meant to have come up through Spain, from Africa, which is why the name 'Blue Men of the Sahara' is interesting. Helluva good find, Thanks.

Kooster McAllister. He played banjo for an early Bluegrass Band based out of Telluride, and they started the festival, and invited their friends. Every year it grew bigger. Eventually, the band fell apart and Kooster became a travelling recording engineer. Kooster's a good friend of Sam Bush, Bela, and basically everybody in the music scene (not just bluegrass). I once asked him just for fun if he ever met Bruce Springsteen. He said, heck, he stayed at his house for a few weeks while he was recording a record for him.
Here's a video of him talking about the latest sound truck he built. http://mixonline.com/ms/aes2007/video/record_plant_remote/

Joel - thanks for the link. Kooster is a really neat guy - I'm truly glad that he is doing so well in his chosen field of work, AND having fun too, it seems. I first met him at the Gatlinburg CCR. IIRC, his visit wuz cut short due to someone in his party going down on wet, freshly mown grass layered on whatever road they came in on. After that, we maintained a short exchange of e-mails over some subject that escapes me at the moment.
I'm gonna PM you, Joel, on a related subject. Thanks again for the link.

Absolutely amazing! I was so blown away I went to Amazon while it was playing and bought the CD! I'm going to see Jerry Douglas in May at the Carriage House at Montalvo here in Saratoga. It's a small venue; 6-800 seats. I'm 4th row center stage.

Here's me and my buddy Jim, found ourselves sitting on the Group W bench outside a coffee shop in Telluride a couple summers ago.
What we found in Telluride:
A $15 souvenir coffee cup
A bench to sit on
Didn't know about the music. We rode on, because it was prettier going out of town than sitting on the bench.
The link that started this thread about Mark O'Connor...wow! If I could play like that, I wouldn't be talking to you people, that's for sure.

Check out this clip. You gotta watch it all. Incredible acoustic guitar with sampling and looping, done live.

Check this guy out. Different style, but there are a lot of familarities. Many of the songs have a hint of classical music, but some are upbeat too.
