View Full Version : Speed up your XP system - Load Kernal in memory at boot time
DaveDragon

This forces Windows to load the kernal in memory.
This one is the best tweak for windows XP I ever found, and it works very well. With this tweak we will force windows to load kernel and drivers in memory.
Here is what you have to do :
1) Open the regedit tool (Start -> Run -> regedit.exe )
2) Use the navigation in the left and go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
3) Double click the DisablePagingExecutive attribute, and put 1 in the decimal value field
This will make the drivers and the XP kernel run in memory.
4) Double click the LargeSystemCache attribute, and put 1 in the decimal value field
This will improve performance of the kernel
5) Double click the IOPageLockLimit attribute. On some later versions of windows XP that doesn’t exists, so if this is the case you’re done. Otherwise you have to put to the hex value : 4000 for pcs with 128 mb ram, 10000 for 256 mb ram and if you have more put 40000. This value specifies how many bytes can be used for I/O operations in your system.
That’s it, enjoy your faster pc

Dell Latitude D620 w/XP-Pro. Pretty well kicken machine already but hey, we all like performance enhancement don't we? No issues with the changes, jury still out on performance increase. All in all, it didn't hurt and if it ends up helping, all the better.

It's an XP Operating System thing and not machine dependant. so the PC with XP Home should work just fine.
Never tried in on ME so I can't say one way or the other.

Dave, this may be an ignorant question...
Running XP, about once a month (at the worst possible time) I get a blue screen for a split second saying something about a driver conflict. I loose everything I am working on, restart the laptop and everything is fine for a while. I have done all the recommended staff, like going back to restore points.
Might this help??
BTW: At home I have solved many issues by converting to MAC.

I doubt this Registry Hack will solve a driver conflict.
Have you checked the system or application logs after a crash to see what caused it?
Right Click on My Computer and Select Manage
On the Right Side of the window Select System Tools
Double Click Event Viewer
Now you have access to the Application, Security and System Logs.
In the System Log you should see Items marked in RED and one or more of these may point to the actual problem.

Hey Dave,
I know VERY little about computers, but my wife is a big dog in IT with a huge corp. I ran this buy her and this was her comment (so don't kill the messenger--unless it's 13 of course then all bets are off :D ):
"That doesn't really make sense.
I'm paraphrasing a site (link to follow), but here's why:
The page file is only used for one of two reasons... 1) The driver is not currently being used, and 2) your system needs more memory for another application (Word, Excel, etc)...
In case number 2, it would actually hurt performance to have the application trying to run have to page instead of the kernel driver.
Now, if you have enough memory to place all kernel and drivers into memory and still run all your apps, then I still don't think there'd be much of an improvement because they you obviously have enough memory for everything to run anyways
Here's the site: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html You have to scroll about half way down to get to the Optimization Tweak myths.
If you do want to see an improvement in your computer's speed, your pretty much limited to hardware upgrades. Most software tweaks only give a placebo effect, or, if they do work, only work on particular cases.
LargeSystemCache... Yes.. .this will speed up your computer... but if it is only a File Server. What this does is it caches more data to RAM as it is being accessed from the disk. If you don't have a bunch of extra RAM, then this will just cause more data to be paged
The last one, I have no idea what this one was, so I looked it up, and if you're running Windows XP, it doesn't do anything."
Looks like Greek to me, but I can't do anything to my machine without her approval...story of my life it seems. :(

I know this is anecdotal and not a scientific measure, but I can really see the difference in speed. Files open quicker and new programs seem to load up much faster. Start up is quicker too. I used to sort of wait between mouse clicks and have been surprised that what I was trying to open was available to use.
QUESTION: Occasionally when watching a You Tube video, it will stop in the middle of a clip. Does this mean that I don't have enough bandwidth or is my computer doing something else in the background and that is tying up memory/space available? Thanks again for the tip...

Does this mean it is on the part of the sender (is it their buffer?) or would it be my computer's buffer? I have cable Internet service that seems to slow down at times. Just curious.

That can mean a number of things. You have to imagine that in order for data to arrive on your monitor it has to go through literally 15 to 20 systems/computers/routers/firewalls ... Having said that MOST of the time the limiting factor is either the senders ability to push data into the internet (upload bandwidth) or your ability to download the data off the internet. In addition to that the bandwidth you have on your cable segment is a SHARED bandwidth with all the other users on your cable segment. If you now have multiple 'Andys' in your neighborhood you will see slowdown at times. And to make things worse, the senders upload bandwidth is also shared. ALL the users of a given site share the upload bandwidth of that one site. so e.g. all the users online at the same time here at BMWLT.com share our upload bandwidth, which while generous is still a finite amount and if too many users at the same time request large downloads like movies or pictures then it can come to a slowdown.

What a troll...Actually, my comment was fairly relevant, if a bit terse. One of the big advantages of OSX is that it has an excellent system for dynamically allocating memory. Apps that need it get it, while apps that don't need as much or are currently idle can easily give it up to those that do. Also, since each program runs in its own isolated memory space, one application crashing won't take down the rest of the computer. No blue screens here.
Having said that, many users are constrained to use some flavor of Windows, be it by corporate edicts, budget constraints, the odd program that requires Windows, or plain old inertia. Then again, you could always just ride an FJR instead of a Beemer, as they basically perform the same function. :)
And in any case, the simplest and most effective performance increase you can do for any PC is to add more memory. Macs will just use that new memory better, and Windows PCs will have more available memory to waste. :)

No doubt ymmv. My home laptop takes a bit more loading from scratch and/or hibernate and it appears that apps load a bit quicker, but to me the jury is still out. Perception is one thing, measure to show appreciable performance is another. I can't see yet where the measure would show appreciable.
DaveD - Don't take it wrong.. I'm not trying to down you here at all. I've been in the field for far too long and have put up with far too much perception vs. reality scenarios for that crap. Just stating observation based upon my experience... I've no doubt some my perceive or actually experience results that make the grade.
In so far as at work, I haven't had the time to play with this. I did pass it on to my team with zero result or feedback so far. No doubt it's a timing thing... We're far to busy to seriously do real R&D. It's sad... :(

Hey! I'm all about Measurable Results.
We tested this using our QA System Performance Tools and found there were several areas that performance improved.
Boot Time Start till Explorer Interface is completely loaded was reduced.
Citrix Client Load & Unload is Faster.
MS Outlook Load & Unload is Faster.
Web Object Instantiation Time is Faster.
FTP File Transfers of Large Files is Faster.
Oracle Financial Web App Load time is Faster.
SAP App Load Time is Faster.
There were several other speed increases as well.
The Tweaks have since been rolled out to every Laptop in the IT Department.
My point: It was throughly Tested.
There are a few other Reg Tweaks we're testing as well that show promising results, but I Think I'll keep those to my self.

Huh? No firewall, no router, no nothing? You designed that network? LOL Hhmmm I wonder how the packets know where to go without a router. You guys must have special NICs ( Network Interface Cards ) or a VERY special form of WinDoze. And a 100MB pipe? Boy, you guys must have money like no end. Really 100MB? Kewl! I have never seen a consumer 1000Mb connection. Care to share what you guys pay for that ?
And a LOT of trust into all your users abilities to protect them from all different kinds of network shit. I would probably not do it that way, but thats just me.

Yup! VERY similar to the BSD design - which I'm told is at least 'parallel' to the Penguin "way of doing things". (I don't play with things that close to the metal)

How about "redundancy"? Or . . . umm . . . "disaster recovery"? Any of these words ringing any bells yet Mr. Internet?
Anytime you want to see a Visio diagram of MY network, you just let me know. I've configured more Cisco switches, gateways, and routers in the last month than you have in the last year. And yes, my configs are all backed up.
Pah-leeze!
Now that is the old Joe again. The Joe I know. If he can't argue his own mistakes and gets called on them he starts swinging the axe about something completely unrelated.
I am not Andy, I have not walked in his shoes, but I do know a bit about IT (Been around the block a couple of times) and if there is one thing I can tell you: With a shoestring budget like I suppose this site as many others is operating on one can only buy so much hardware.
Of course if one has enough money to buy a 100MB connection then money is of no importance one just has it. I would be VERY astonished if that is the case with the guys that run this site.
If you are serious in putting down the folks that designed run and operate this site then I have just lost the last bit of respect for you. But I suspect your reaction was just a kee jerk because you couldn't respond seeing that infallible Joe made some boo-boo's. LOL.

But if I call Andy on grammar error, it's OK for him to point out that I can't speak German. Hypocrite!
No, dear Joe. You was pointed out for something that you made fun of. YOU not being able to speak any kind of foreign language, are making fun of someone who makes a mistake in a language not his own? Really You do that? You mean that serious? REALLY? Getting pissed afterward because you got called on something?
Oh, and you finger stuck on the shift key? Just HOW often got your finger 'stuck' on the shift key? Every time?
Oh, I forgot you have one of those 1GHz NIC card. You even know WHAT you are talking about? OK, I am going to type it slow so that you can understand it:
NIC = Network Interface Card
so therefore a nic card is a Network Interface Card Card
And before I forget: A 1Gb network card has nothing to do with 1GHz. That is like comparing inches to gallons. And no you CANNOT use them interchangeably. Just like your bike doesn't use 5 inches of gas, but 5 gallons.
Usually I keep to myself and only laugh about you, but lately you are getting better and better. Almost like a bad standup

Working for a large school system has it's advantages. And no, those readings aren't accurate. Like I said, I think I might break their gauges someday. :p

Man, leave that poor schmuck alone! Can't you see he is trying to avoid that like hell because he has publically humiliated himself and shown just how much he (really) knows?
Hey Joe: I've got a new pet: Calling you out every time you come up with BS like last night again. Man, that is fun!
Always remember the saying about the pilots? There are bold pilots and then there are old pilots, but no bold, old pilots. I guess the same can be said about some web forums. There are those that have 13000+ posts in a short time, and then there are those that make high quality posts. But ...

...and one more "aviation saying" here for Joe since he lives a stone's throw from the Amish:
"Keep thee thine altitude - lest the ground rise up and smite thee"
I'm just glad Joe's back - been awfully dull around here lately without him! :thumb:

Hey Joe: I've got a new pet: Calling you out every time you come up with BS like last night again. Man, that is fun!Easy hiding behind a keyboard...ya little wimp. Funny I've never met you in person. What? Don't ride much? Poser!
The only man who ever had the guts to tell me what they really thought (in person) was Grif. And for that, I will be eternally respectful of him.
There are those that have 13000+ posts in a short time, and then there are those that make high quality posts. But ...Too bad you don't fall into either category. You just show up every time you get a chance to zing me. I'm starting to think I've got a stalker. Or ... you're really just an alias of some mega poser that's already here on the forum. Either case is just as sad. Really, really sad.

Geeks and nerds can make fun of Joe all they want... They won't take his dignity away. The man has a thick skin, and typos aside he actually does know his IT $hit.
Now if you want to peel every post and criticized the spelling, grammar, or syntax this forum would be dead in no time.
Some riders use there breaks to stop their bike (a motorcycle with a vehicle VIN number, and fill their tiers with air. They use avitars on their signatures and navigate with a Garmon GPS or compatable divice. Yet we know what they mean and answer their questions without mocking them (too much). How is that different than GHz typed in quickly instead of GB? Why would some newbie who never made a single technical or monetary contribution to the site open his big virtual mouth and criticize Joe? That is beyond me...
Oh well, I am going back to my IT job now, having enjoyed my daily morning ride.
Hey Joe, can't wait to see you in CA this Spring and share some Guinness with ya! (Yes, I do know it is supposed to be "you" but I don't give no hoot no more! )

Boy these posts get out of hand quickly... I wish I could filter all the off topic banter so I can concentrate on the meat of the post...
I'm not an IT guy, although I play one at work... In charge of "several" servers, desktops, laptops, PDAs and a remote office (or two, depending on the day of the week) - pretty much the whole she-bang.
Having said that, I'm definitely going to try that tweak - we have several machines here that could use the performance increase.
Although OFF TOPIC - what are you guys going to do once XP availability goes bye-bye? Are they extending corporate/open license availability beyond June...?
Oh yeah - here's mine - not too shabby for a standard business-class cable connection, in which were were only promised UP TO 8Meg speed... :D

The Windows Key shortcuts are among my favorite and most-used. I am not much of a mouser, and I use keyboard shortcuts constantly. Checkout THIS PAGE (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301583) at microsoft.com. That's a good one to printout and keep next to the desk in plain sight. That is ... if'n you're a geek like me.

Thanks for the link, Joe. I knew a few Windows logo shorcuts, but it's good to see the list. I'm not a geek, but I play one at work. :)
By the way, in my experience of only 11 years, NIC stands for Network Interface Controller, so saying NIC card is correct. It's easily confused. Even wikipedia has conflicting info on the same page. Those darned acronyms!
PCMCIA = People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms.
Dave, thanks for the tips. I googled up the myth pages, too, that do mention the reg edits. Interesting that your testing showed improvements. You do run many apps in your corp. environment that home users never heard of. I'll try them in my lab next week if I get the chance. I do the Mac support for my company, too, so I'll be busy working on my new 10.5 image, plus planning the VPN client upgrade, planning the CSA upgrade, finishing the QMX for SMS upgrade, monitoring the Connected Backup/PC and SAV servers, working on SMS client health, working with the server team on migrating our entire domain so we can dump the verizon name, etc. Dang I'm busy!
I wish that all of my brothers would stop picking on each other so much. It may start out in fun, but it always goes way too far.
