I just bought a 2002 K1200lt and the battery is dead. where is it so I can remove it and charge it ? also i cannot unlock any of the saddle bags or trunk. the key turns but the handles won"t release . :confused: can someone please enlighten me???

The battery is under the seat. Open the left side saddle bag. Try the key both ways and press the key button to release the lever latch. Once open you will see a pull knob at the very front. Pull that and lift the seat. Better to charge it in place as there are several wires hooked to each terminal and if you miss one ... it won't start. Hmmm. Good luck and come back if you need more help. Your gonna love the bike once it is runng.

You can jump start as well. I received jump a few times from 2000 Toyota RAV4 with no problems.

I see you are in Connecticut, where you get some real winter weather. Assuming the side cases are actually unlocked, it could be that some moisture has worked its way inside the locks and they are simply frozen. That happened to me recently. It had me scratching my head until the first day above freezing, when they "magically" started working again.

Also, since it is new to you, be careful not to turn your key to "parking light" setting which is one click past the "off" setting. That will kill the battery deader than dead. Don't ask how I know.. :o

Another option for battery charging is through the accesories plugs. On my 02 LTC their is one by the drivers left knee and one by the passengers left elbow. You would need a trickle charger and the matching BMW adapter.

If you have to remove the battery, wire tie all of the Negative cables together and then all of the positive cables together. This helps keep one of them from getting lost.

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think you can really get a good charge on a DEAD batter through this plug. You can keep a trickle charge on a charged battery, but I don't think, if the battery is completely drained, you can get enough to it to bring it back this way. I've been told to connect to the terminals and use more than just a trickle charge.

Yup, you're right - to a degree. If you're using a Battery Tender product, they have a procedure whereby you fool the BT into reacting to a battery that it recognizes is at least 3% charged capacity. To do so, you need to jump the dead battery to a known good battery while you attach the BT leads. Then, once you get the required light on the BT lit, you can/must disconnect the full-charge unit and let the BT finish the job. Happened to me years ago, and the tech at Lone Star BMW in Austin ran me thru the procedure - THEN I read the instructions from Deltran (BT maker). It works. BUTT, I'd keep on eye on that battery for the immediate future, cuz once fully discharged, it's life span has been shortened and could be a problem waiting in the wings.
