Yes, according to Cycle World's Roundup column, which sez "A bill passed by the legislature makes legal the practice of lane-splitting, or as it is defined in the bill, (operation) of the motorcycle for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the same direction during periods of traffic congestion".

I thought I remembered some previous discussion of the topic and the outcome wuz that the bill did not pass. Publishing deadlines may have contributed to this article being in error, or is it correct? And with little fanfare in the local media, if it is correct!

Hhmmm, now that would be nice. Especially during rush hour this cut cut another 1/3 of my commute ...

Well, I lane split at least 5 miles nearly every day here in San Diego over the last 5 years, and in that time have not heard of ONE accident because of it. Yes, there were motorcycle accidents, but none I heard of that were related to lane splitting.

I talked to three different CHP officers about lane splitting, and they all basically said that lane splitting was rarely a contributing factor in motorcycle accidents.

However, if I was in ANY state that just made it legal, I would be afraid to try it for at least a year. Gotta get the word out to the cage drivers and gain acceptance first!

It is so normal here in CA that in 5 years I only know of 2-3 instances where a driver made it known that they did not like it. At least one of those was from out of state. John Wilson was following me at the time, and stopped next to the driver and told him that "It is legal here in California, and if you don't like it, go back to Arizona". He said the driver leaned over to the right, so he skedaddled before he could possibly bring up a gun. :D :D

I imagine if Texas does make it legal, it could take a considerable time for it to become as safe as it is here in CA, where it has been the norm for many years.

I heard the MSF is going to request a retraction. The bill died in committee.

BEWARE! of the uninformed media!!
Texas HB 1522 H Referred to Law Enforcement 02/28/2005
This bill DIED in committee!!
Do not be confused by Section 2 of the Bill
"SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005."
This would have been the effective date if passed into law.
As an added note:
HB 264 suffered a similar fate.
For those unaware; HB 264 effectively repealed the helmet law in Texas.
As of the present, Texas is a mandatory helmet state.
