Has anyone come out with a super-lightweight (e.g., carbon fiber) helmet that is available in the U.S.? I know you Euro-guys have several great choices, but nobody seems willing to bring them into the lawsuit-happy U.S. :(

I tried on the SHoei RF-1000, and it was quite comfortable and lighter than my Syncrotec, but I'm wondering if there's anything similarly comfortable and even LIGHTER...

These guys claim to be the lightest. http://www.nexlsports.com/

I have one of their half helmets and it is like a feather.

Looks interesting...I wonder how comfortable/quiet their full face helmets are...

Try the Shoeii X11. I think if someone makes a lighter helmet you wouldn't really notice the difference.
As has been stated here many times, fit is the most important attribute to most folks. If the X11 fits yer noggin, I think you'd be very happy.

Bruce, I just saw an ad from Arai in the current issue of 'Cycle World' magazine that shows a full face helmet about to be released by Arai-stay tuned.

Try the X-11, should be lighter with wider viewing area.

The lightest helmet I have ever seen sold here in the U.S. that is a solid name brand is a Suomy Spec 1-R. I would not want to wear it in the winter though because the vents don't close.
Raffy rides with one and so do I. It has the best material I have ever felt inside a helmet.
A quote from their site: The lightest weight (1250 grams), race approved helmet available

Very interesting, Scott! How are the Suomy helmets as far as wind noise (can you compare them to anything else)?

And as for the vents not closing, couldn't you just plug them in cold weather? (Bubble gum? Cotton balls? Silly putty?) :D

Currently I have 4 Arai's and the Suomy. I find that the quietest helmet is the 3/4 Arai SZ/m. Obviously that isn't what your asking about so as a comparison between my Arai RX-7 and the Suomy I would say they are very similar BUT the Suomy may be a tad louder. If I am going anywhere longer then a putt around town I usually wear earplugs though so it doesn't really matter.
The Suomy's have to have some of the coolest graphics I have ever seen. Most have glitter impregnated into the paint scheme and I get SO many compliments when I wear that helmet. I have the Goorbergh and if you zoom in on that helmet on the US website you will get a good idea of what I am talking about. Biggest thing I rave about though on them is that it has a Dupont material on the interior that is really soft.

I have two Spec 1 R helmets both solid colors. As Scott said they are summer helmets although I have been wearing my black one this week down to 36 degrees. They are very comfortable. Definitely need to wear earplugs when on a sport bike.

I think I paid $210 delivered for each. They were on closeout (2004 model year).
