Ok, Be kind, I am trying to decide what to do about my suspension. I have a 99 with 65K and I do need to replace the shocks. I would like to keep the bike for a few more years at this point but the newer models have the changed front rake and more HP so thats tempting but that means the GPS, Moto lights, JPEGS are involved in the trade as well.

I have considered ohlins, works and OEM and I expect even if I combine this with my next 12K service its still a spendy proposition no matter what I do. I do not feel up to doing a complete tear down of the bike as I have only removed the tupperware to facilitate a valve gasket replacement while at the rally in Redmond. So its basically just doing oil changes, replaceing lights and some other minor maintance I have completed myself. In looking at the posts there are a few fairly technical aspects to the teardown required to do this anyway.

Anyone on this board replaced the OEM shocks with OEM replacements? Or willing to share opinion about which is the better option.

Thanks
Rick

Richard, Go with what your heart tells you. The BMW shocks are one setup for all riders no matter weight or riding style. Any of the after market shocks will be or should be tuneable to rider/passenger and riding style at the time of purchase.

Just for you thoughts here is the pricing for BMW shocks. A rear shock retails for $783, Chicago BMW price $626.40. A front shock retails for $278, Chicago BMW price $ 222.40. At full price a set of BMW replacements is going to cost you between $848.40 and $1061. A set of aftermarkets will be $1500 or more per set.

Either way you go, it will be an expensive proposition. Hopefully, I haven't made it a gloomy one.

I was in exactly the same position with my 99.
I went 2nd hand as I was skint at the time. My old shock was really dead.
Did the job myself and it was not hard at all.
BUT - have you tried refilling the adjuster yet?
My 2nd hand shock improved no end when I did this - a half hour job with major results. You may not need to spend more then the price of the jack oil used!
btw give me a shout when you are getting rid of the Moto lights and JPEGS
