View Full Version : Ride Vermont 2008

The KLT in my little shop of horrors for the 60K service and this January thaw got me thinking...well, why not organize Ride Vermont in 2008?
Target date: June 13-15.
Assemble Friday night at the Gray Ghost in Dover.
http://www.grayghostinn.com/
This year we'll head more directly north and capture a few of the notches before retiring to the Grey Bonnet in Killington.
http://www.greybonnetinn.com/content/home/
I'll work on a group discount for the rooms if there is enough interest expressed from the group here.
Lessons learned from the last ride of the BBDs which was the largest group of riders I have ever ridden point for: Last year I always had someone in my rearview mirror, but at the end of the day some felt the pace was too fast, and some found themselves occasionally wondering what road to take, having lost sight rider ahead. I hope and expect to have my favorite pillion rider with me this year, but that doesn't slow my pace too much, we generally ride a spirited pace. However, that said, I want to encourage folks more comfortable with a slower pace to join. Suggestion: if every rider keeps an eye on the rider behind them and slows the pace as needed to keep that rider in view then the rear will control the pace. If this doesn't work we can split into groups. I'll print up some route maps this year.
So, anyone interested in the 2nd annual ride of the Beemer Biker Dudes?

Thanks for pointing that out. Some folks may want to do Americade which would create a conflict for them.... and the event does put a few more bikes on the road in VT. Nothing more frustrating than being behind a group ride of Wings or V-Twins. Harder to pass than a semi.

We've already found problems with 3 weekends in June. Kinda of like trying to herd cats. :)
In an effort to pick a weekend that will work for most folks let's open the window a little wider. Weather and roads in April are less predictable and I'd rather get this in before July. The month of May might work.
How about anyone interested select a date or dates from the following list that might work for them:

May 23-25
May 30 -June 1

Ah, the curse of being "Road Captain"! No matter what pace you try to maintain, it's either too fast, or too slow (or worse yet, both!)
Route maps are the best way out. Everyone rides his/her own pace, or in smaller groups (road maps in advance allow pre-programming of routes into the GPS - hint, hint) and as long as everyone meets up at the end of the day, it's all good.

Hey I think I was the one in the rearview mirror most of the day. I thought the ride was great. I would call it spirited. I am working on my schedule now so i will post later today the weekend that works for me. Thanks CharlieVT for leading last year and putting this one together.

Stay tuned to this thread to this thread for updates. We now have a primary date and a backup date.
Primary: May 9-11
Secondayr: May 30- June 1
I will work on MS Trips and Streets and Garmin MapSource files and eventually post them so folks can download the proposed route.
My pace of riding is best described as "spirited" even with the world's best pillion rider on board we ride kinda fast. Posted speed limits in towns are anywhere from 25 to 45 mph. Within town limits I try to keep the pace within 10 mph of posted limits; I consider this both a courtesy to the residents of the town and sensible ticket avoidance. Outside of towns the posted speed limit is generally 50 mph; unless my "spider sense" warns of a speed trap I basically ignore the limits and ride the conditions as I see them. With good visibility and good road surface that might mean 75 mph at times; mostly I think our speed is in the 55-65 mph range. This is on rural dirt and gravel roads, on the paved roads we go faster (Okay, just kidding here ;) ).
Maybe one of the BBDs will post what they remember speeds were during last years ride.
Last year my pace was faster than the usual pace of some of the group. We are going to try to make an effort to make it comfortable for everyone. That doesn't mean that the group will go as slow as the slowest rider. Too slow isn't a comfortable pace for some people. :). We may form more than one group, creating groups of like-minded riders. And by providing route maps some folks can do the ride at their own pace.
While this is primarily a K1200LT ride, any kind of bike is welcome. I got teased a little for the following statement last year but I will make the statement again. LOUD pipes are not welcome. I consider loud motorcycles to be rude and I am embarrased to ride with them. We had a great group of gentlemen motorcyclists last year and the pleasure of their company and the joy of the ride prompted me to offer to organize the ride again this year. We had great riding, good conversation, and some great laughs.

Hey Charlie,
Right on and right back at ya. Some laughs a few beers and a good dinner. My wife was wondering if we could do some covered bridges. What do ya think? Again thanks for the planning around my schedule.
The last ride I seem to remember approaching 80 at one point or two. And I was just trying to keep charlieVT insight. But I am not complaining.
Also my wife would love some switch backs.

Covered Bridges, Aye. Can do.
Switchbacks: (by switchback I'm guessing you mean 180 degree hairpin turns). There are a few roads with turns like that, but none I can think of where they are linked back to back like the climbs in the Alps to the alpine passes. These are often scenic because to the view afforded; switchbacks are usually associated with climbing for altitude. I will try to come up with a combination of twistes (generally in the valleys along small streams) and sweepers which often give more of a view from the mountiansides. And there might be a "switchback" or two in there.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Curtis:
How about route 17 over the mountain past Mad River Glen? Some good switchbacks there. If you are doing Smuggler's Notch, we could either hit it on the way up or the way back. Comes right into Rt. 100 in Waitsfield. If we hit it from Waitsfield, we'll be going down the mountain, if from the east, we'll be going up the mountain (more fun IMHO).

Route 17 (Appalachian Gap or AppGap) is on my planned route for Saturday. And your suggestion is a good one, it is a great motorcycle road. For those folks who made the Sunday ride last year we did AppGap on Sunday. AppGap is fun both ways, we did it from west to east last year. No matter which way you go, you get to go up one side and down the other. :) Last year I had planned on AppGap for Sunday but several folks needed or wanted to head for home and missed AppGap. So this year I am putting on the Saturday plan.
Rte. 108 (Smuggler's Notch) is kind of neat, but it isn't that great a motorcycle road because it's prone to lots of tourist traffic especially on weekends. Smuggler's Notch was on the alternate list for last year but I chose to spend more time on some of the less traveled, secondary roads. It is easy to find the time to get up to Smuggler's Notch if we just stay on rte. 100 and "notch hop". If there is more interest in Smuggler's Notch, I'll work it in. I do know backroads that get to Smuggler's without going through the cluster that Stowe can be on busy weekends. Rte 100 is nice, but after a while I find it gets a little boring (Maybe because I am so familiar with it). We'll use rte 100 for the "high speed" runs to get from place to place.
BBDs will remember we did about 200 miles and spent about 6 hours on Saturday traveling to a destination we could have arrived at in less than 2 hours by staying on rte 100. Seeking the roads less traveled, and the covered bridges takes time and makes it harder to get up to the "northern territories".
Good suggestions, we're all on top of those.

Too difficult to say now if we can make it up (Telle works some strange shifts) but if the routes are posted, we may try to join in and at least meet everyone at the first night stop. She's not much for "spirited riding", and, to be honest, I like to take my time and enjoy the scenery myself, especially on roads I'm not too familiar with.
Now, it's time once again to be ready to grab the handlebars - of the snow blower. :-(

Tat,
It sounds like this year will be a more comfortable pace. My SO does not like the spirited riding either. She is kind of a control freak. No not really but she does not like blasting down the road at double the speed limit. Hope to see you and the misses at the 2nd annual BBD ride. BBDs always welcome new riders. If I remember correctly from our last ride we have only one rule and that is there are no rules. :)

Well, at least I know I won't get in trouble!
If the route is programmed into my GPS, I have no problem whatsoever in letting the "spirited" riders go ahead and catching up later. Have camera, will stop for photo ops! Besides, if you're the last one arriving at the bar, most will already be in pretty good spirits (no pun intended) and tend to want to buy you a round! (There is a method to my madness.)

Sure, we can handle a slow HD rider bringing up the rear. Sounds like we might have former HD riders on LTs bringing up the rear too.
The rear guard can pull over and cheer the point rider while waiting for his performance certificates to be written up. ;)
And the picture takers can post their work after the ride and I won't have to bring my camera. ;)
Kind of a small group for custom attire, but I can alway use another ball cap pr T-shirt. :) .

Wow! Several of you have already made reservations.
Last year I negotiated a group rate at the other inn but didn't even get a chance to set it up at the Gray Ghost. Never mind.... seems the rates you guys are getting are pretty good anyway.
I did email the inn keepers and told them to expect more reservations from the BBDs (Beemer Biker Dudes).
My current thoughts of the route: Saturday we will run north on rte 100 for a couple or few of the notches and then return to the Ghost.
Sunday maybe a southern Vermont meandering with roads the likes of which BBDs will recall from last year with necessary stops to visit a few covered bridges.
Any other request for places of interest? Maple Sugar "museum" ?
Ben and Jerry's is a bit far north, but we do have Tom and Sally's home made chocloate factory locally; chocolates which are to die for.
Or for you flatlanders, we could just stop by a local dairy and you can sample a cow pie. :)
Amended: One of the nice things about riding though dairy farm country is the nice fresh air associated with them :). You gotta be a local to love it. :o

Made my reservation today. REALLY nice guy on the phone! Room rate includes a cooked to order breakfast.
They will be holding a breast cancer charity event on Saturday and he will be sending info should we choose to attend. As said in previsous post, even if you don't attend the event, 20% of your room rate goes to the charity. As a cancer survivor, this hits home with me pretty well.
Looking forward to this as much as the STC!

Hey guys,
Just went to make my reservation and the Ghost is sold out that weekend. They referred me to the Doveberry Inn which is right next door. Tell them you're with the BBD group and they're honoring the Ghost's rates as well as offering breakfast. The Ghost is also offering a dinner and they are opening it up to all who would like to join, including those who are staying elsewhere. Sounds like it's going to be a busy place that weekend!

CharlieVT...Stepping UP to the KLT?
I stepped FURTHER up ! to the K1200RS, According to BMW Motorcycles by Holstrom and Nelson, p 159, "the K1200RS was the fastest motorcycle BMW had ever produced".
According to me though, the RS stands for Rocket Sled :D
I was curious about the word pillion: According to Merriam Webster:
Main Entry: pil·lion
Pronunciation \ˈpil-yən\
Function: noun
Etymology:
Scottish Gaelic or Irish; Scottish Gaelic pillean, diminutive of peall covering, couch; Irish pillín, diminutive of peall covering, couch
Date: 1503
1 a light saddle for women consisting chiefly of a cushion b: a pad or cushion put on behind a man's saddle chiefly for a woman to ride on
2 chiefly British : a motorcycle or bicycle saddle for a passenger
Date: 2007
1 chiefly German : comfortable, oversized backrest, often opinionated and needlessly expensive, designed with a pair of dome shaped protrusions of various sizes to support the rider's middle to upper back, depending on model chosen. Frequently results in reduced speed and gas mileage.

Before the T-shirt designs get too exotic, I'd suggest trying to maximize appeal to the whole group. Skulls, smoking tires, graphics depicting illegal speeds all suggest renegade bad biker dudes, and some BBDs won't be interested. I know I won't.
Recalling where the term Beemer Biker Dudes came from (who was it that coined the name "Beemer Biker Dudes" while were were sitting at the table at the Grey Bonnet?), that great response came out of conversation while we were laughing about this thread: http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=166939#poststop
Can we use the CCR logo? We could ask the CCR board if we can. I like this logo, it is a nice graphic, I don't know if it is copyrighted.
I'd go for a ball cap or a T-shirt with "Beemer Biker Dudes" printed or embroidered on one side and the CCR logo on the other.
For a shirt I'd put "Beemer Biker Dudes" in a medium sized font on the front of a shirt in normal area of a shirt pocket and the CCR logo on the back of the shirt.
For a ball cap, I'd put the CCR logo on front above the visor, and "Beemer Biker Dudes" on the back.
Our group isn't that large, and I suspect that most companies have a minimum order size. So if someone wants to take the initiative on seeing if a small run of custom shirts or hats is possible, what the cost would be, and then how many of the BBDs will actually buy one, I say great, go for it. Your risks are that the person who places the order ends up with a bunch of shirts that no one wants. Seems to me the person who undertakes this initiative (BTW, it isn't gong to be me) would want to post a design, get a commitment to buy from individual BBDs before placing an order.

I agree that needs to be fun but not offending. The comment from TAT about the skull as descrived, he is right. But we can still use something like. I thought for the chest the BMW roundel with BMW around the top and BBD's around the bottom. Now in the back we need to think some thing tasteful but fun. I do not have a design program for that but suggestions are welcome. What about a similar graphic as the wild hogs but instead say wild BBD's :) An idea.

Route planning for Sat, Ride VT 2008
250+ miles, 6+ hours
Rte 100, a couple of the more popular motorcycle notches, and some of the lesser known roads.
Attahced file is MS Trips and Streets.
I'll eventually post a Garmin MapSource file.

Here are MS Trips n' Streets and Garmin MapSource files for a Sunday Ride.
This route does about 130 miles in 4 hours and ends at the much photographed Creamery Bridge in Brattleboro, less than a mile from I-91 for those who will hop on the slab for the ride home.
Added note: My Trips n' Streets data base apparently doesn't know about the covered bridge at Dummerston. The big detour down to Brattleboro show between points 16 and 17 on the Trips 'n Streets file will not be part of the route.

In an effort to pick a weekend that will work for most folks let's open the window a little wider. Weather and roads in April are less predictable and I'd rather get this in before July. The month of May might work.
How about anyone interested select a date or dates from the following list that might work for them:

Hey J, Firefighter,
Read posts later in the thread and you'll see the ride Vermont date is set for May 30,31, Jun 1. Hope that doesn't conflict with your plans to head west.
I had to look on the map to find Columbia, NH... you are in the heart of some beautiful riding country. North of North Stratford, huh? You have the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, the White Mtns of NH, and Maine in your backyard. Spinedr isn't too far from your location over in ME. Maybe you and he can hook up for the ride down to Ride Vermont 2008 if you both can make it.

I saw Bill a few weeks ago to borrow the 30mm socket from him for the weep hole. He's real busy moving from one house to another about 30 miles away, so he's not on the forum much. I mentioned Ride Vermont 2008 to him.

Got a real nice phone message from Barnett today saying that folks had been wondering where I was. Much appreciated. I hereby declare that rumors of my demise are premature (as far as I know), and that meeting Gautama at the inaugural Ride Vermont (better known as "The Shock and Awe Ride of the BBDs") did not lead to my long term institutionalization. Shortly after the Ride Vermont '07 I rode the LT out to Oregon and back, had a great time, and had lots of things to catch up on when I returned. I was spending too much time on this site and on the Wiki that is being developed, so I had to stay off the site for awhile. Then we impulsively bought a house and I had to finish a ton of projects on the old house to get it in shape to sell. And the new house needed a complete kitchen renovation (almost finished) and 2 bathroom renovations (not started yet). So, I check in once and awhile to wistfully read about plans like the Ride Vermont '08, but I think this year I will have to devote all available time to the house. Have a funtastic time on the ride, and I shall be thinking of you.

I suggest that the BBDs all converge on WAS's new digs with hammers in hand, permanently fix that abode so he'll have no excuse to dodge Ride Vermont 2008.
Seriously, Bill if you can't make it, we'll miss you.

Ah, you guys are the best, I don't care what all the others say about you. Although, I have to admit, the thought of a passel of BDDs wielding anything larger than a bottle of brew is frankly terrifying. Spinedr and dynamite - sends so many shivers up my spine that I'll need constant realignment. I can see BMWphreak and Lzyellodog showing up with chainsaws and jackhammers, and you just know that CharlieVT has a monster bulldozer hidden in one of those sheds. Perhaps if the project were different . . . something along the lines of removing the top half of Mount Washington . . . some well-placed dynamite from Spinedr, some cables rigged around granite crags, hook up those cables to about 8 LTs, and just drag that sucker down the road from the summit. Now that is a project worthy of the BDDs, and I would definitely be there to see it. From the peak of Mount Jefferson. ;)
I like Curtis' idea: I'll come to Vermont if you all promise not to demolish my house in Guilfo . . . uh, I mean Pretoria. Yeah, that's the town, Pretoria. (Where my house is. Difficult to find on a map, and somehow the magnetic fields screw up GPS readings, so GPS software refuses to acknowledge its existence. Best give me a call for directions if you want to stop by. . .) :)
Dang, this site is pernicious. One post, just a minor relapse on my part, and now I find myself thinking about how I could get away for that weekend and join you for a day or two. I'll probably wait to make a decision until I see how other things are progressing, but I'd sure like to ride again with you. Hey, if I am not able to make it I expect long-winded tales of the ride and lots of pics!

......and that ......inaugural Ride Vermont (better known as "The Shock and Awe Ride of the BBDs") did not lead to my long term institutionalization......
Okay, by way of apology, I will say again that the 2007 ride of the BBDs was the largest group I have ever "ridden point" for. I am reminded of the oft repeated question; "was it good for you?". ;)
I have guided rides of small groups of "aggressive" riders who were delighted to have someone out front to flush out the speedtraps. I learned from the 2007 ride of the BBDs; we don't want ride participants to be "shocked". In 2008, the "rules of engagement" will be modified a little to provide increased comfort for those who choose to join the group. We will "Pow-wow" and talk about how to try and make the ride most rewarding for all who choose to participate. We expect more two-up bikes this year, and the route has been "published" for those with MS Trips & Streets or a Garmin product so you can more comfortably ride your own ride without feeling a need to chase the group. We may end up with more than one group, depending on the comfort level of the participants.
So, come on, join in, and enjoy the ride.

Ok. I have something to tell. Since the last BBD ride, my wheel was bend by a crater, I change the tires and kept riding the rest of the season. I just took my LT for service to Max's and was told that the rim has to be change (that I knew) and the front suspension or dampening bar?? is bend and needed replaced. This is 450 for service, 1200 for arm, 850 for rim. WOW I ask Tom (service Manager) if for the LT this problem is common when hitting a crater. Tom, the chief of service say yes, have seen it in the LT before due to engineering and weight. Have not seen a GT with this problem so far. I am surrounded by craters in Maine. I am thinking in trading it to a GT, for two reasons, My wife dose not ride with me and The GT is lighter for every day rides and some. I am confuse and can not make up my mind. The GT is a Silver color 08 loaded, nice bike. They would take the bike as is and fix it, I have been paying extra so I brake almost even. I had to let it of my chest and see what you think of this. I know is a personal decision but love to know what you think.

Well, my decision was to go down to 2 cylinders and "only" 110 hp. I would be dead or arrested on a GT! Good deals on leftover 2007s can be had.

I agree with Phreak on this one. Lighter weight, better reliability, lower cost maintenance and a better (in my humble opinion) engine performance-wise for the real world than the new style K engine.
You may want to look at the RT or maybe even better a GS/GSA?

I am seriously thinking about trading the LT in after the May ride for the RT. I know I ahve said it before but I think I want the lighter RT. I can't speak for the LT, but this RT is way kewl! And not having had my rear pampered by an aftermarket seat, ever, the stock seat on the RT seems fine to me. For that matter, so too does the wind screen. Perhaps experience will tell otherwise down the road but for now it's all good.

Thanks for the response and sorry for the hijack. I know you and I am interested on your opinion. I am considering the RT but worried about the vibration of the engine for long trips. I work with my hands and they get real sore by the end of the week. I never had a two cylinder, I was thinking one of those as a second bike and for short trips but as the main bike I am just to the smoothness of a 4 cylinder. That is why I have been looking at the GT. The second bike is going to have to wait for 3 to 4 years now that this happened. Is just that 4 is familiar for long trips. Thanks again and lets talk about May and hope that I am going to have a bike to ride with you :)

I think that the LT is a great one-up bike.
I have never ridden the with topcase removed, but lots of guys have stated that it makes a big difference.
Sure there are lighter and more flickable bikes out there but the LT can crank the twisties and burn the sweepers with a remarkably solid feel, and still do the long hauls in great comfort.
For long distance, smoothing out the road, performance it is a really great bike.
I'd add to my stable but I wouldn't give up the LT.

Excellent position and assumed to be from experience. I'm not (experienced), but I'll say that I too would add to my stable, but I wouldn't give up my RT (yet). Flickable? Oh yea. I see this RT as an excellent compromise between all out riding a couch long distance to all out runnin' tight twisties with ease. I have moved the LT from the lift in the little shop of horrors to its ususal stable in the barn. I'll go for a ride any day now. Still have a big slab of ice in the drive where the trees shade. A friend rode up in the yard on his dual sport last week, but the public roads are still a bit salty and sandy. I have seen one BMW rider out riding. When the roads are wet with the melt runoff, there is lots of salt in that water which is kind of hard on the bikes. I usually wait for the melt to finish and a good rain to wash down the roads. Soon... soon.
Spinedr is referring to a book titled "Not Without Peril" which we bought when we were on the summit of Mt. Washington last year. It is a collection of stories about different folks who throughout history got caught by bad weather on Mt. Washington and died. Interesting reading.

If there is any interest I will consider the following:
BBQ at my place Friday afternoon. The Gray Ghost is about 30 minutes away so I wouldn't run a shuttle service like I did last year. That only means BBQers have to watch the beer consumption in anticipation of a ride to the Ghost.
I'd understand if folks would rather gather and party in Dover where the Ghost is located.
Tech session: We could do some KLT service items if there is interest. Or, I have a busted final drive being shipped to me, we could do a "rebuild a final drive" tech session. Seeing it done might make folks a little more prepared to do an "emergency" final drive repair if a failure happens far from home or a BMW dealer.

Oil change for someone. (Do you always spill that much oil?) :)
Please note before you volunteer your bike for a tech session that I am the recipient of a very coveted award:

I am also planning a firewood splitting contest. This a rare and special opportunity, somewhat akin to white washing a fence:

I like this contest! I had participated in the past on one of those.
But when Charlie switched the wood, it was not pretty!

Did I do that to you Sprios? I had forgotten. Old trick I played on my kids: show them how to swing the splitting maul using a nice piece of straight grained, easy splitting wood. Then put up a gnarly piece on the splitting block and say "now you try". If someone doesn't know how to "read" the wood, they are surprised how easy I made it look when the maul bounces off the piece I put up for them. :)
BTW The firewood splitting contest is a joke. I don't put enough ";)" in my posts...
Advice: when in doubt, don't take me seriously.
Seriously.
So Spiros, you going to try to make the ride?

Spinedr, your SO coming on her HD?
Hi Curtis. I was hoping to make a decision about VT from I got back from the STC but while down here I had a get off at about 40mph and the LT is not rideable. I am sitting here cooling my heels until Monday when I can talk to my claims adjuster(they dont work on the weekends in these parts-Progressive). so I guess I will have to turn in my BBD badge this year.
I hopfully will be posting pictures of the custom job when i get home. I walked away with only a few cuts in the palm of my left hand and a few sore spots. Jim & Gerard can fill in the details.
My regards to the group.

Chief, glad it wasn't worse. Sounds like your injuries aren't too bad, but really sorry to hear of anything bad happening. And that's bad stuff.
Heal fast.
Hope you get back on two wheels soon, and still hope you can make it for Ride Vermont 08.

Hey gang. I think the BBQ for dinner sounds great. The SO is joining us. We are planning on heading north around 3PM. We are planning on meeting up with Gerard and Sue on 91.
I just got back from STC. 940 miles a total of 2 days riding in the rain and sun. I did about 540 miles today alone.
I can not be blamed for Freds get off. I was not there when it happened.
Fred,
Thanks for the use of the seat pillow and the back rest. It did make it easier. I hope you are doing well. And let us know if there is anything we can do to get ya back up and running. Let us know when you are home.

My wife and I went for a 350 mile ride today with both bikes GT and HD. Went to Max BMW for 600 mile service on the GT. What a beautiful day it was for riding. We saw 4 moose on the side of the road in NH during the drive back home after Conway. My wife made the comment that she is ready for the VT ride and I have to agree with her. I am hoping for good weather :sun:

This year we'll head more directly north and capture a few of the notches before retiring to the Grey Bonnet in Killington.
How does this look?

I have got to see what wrong with my stereo. Stopped working after the bike tipped over in NC. It was fully loaded and on the center stand when it sunk into the wet dirt at the Iron Horse. I am hoping it is just a plug that came undone. You know that was side Kevin put back together hmmm. I wonder if it is related. :)

WE just got back from a road trip. Ft Myers, Fl to Vt. Heavy rains, but we were in a rented auto.
I find a few new posts in the Ride Vermont thread.
Yes, both nights at the Gray Ghost in Dover, VT. The Grey Bonnet is NOT part of this year's plans.
Friday afternoon everyone is welcome at our place in W. Brattleboro where we will start burning charcoal around 6pm. The Gray Ghost is about 30 minutes ride from here. I have indications that both Ladies and Gentlemen will be here in W. Bratt. on Friday afternoon. Folks are welcome to arrive anytime afternoon. No evidence of interest in a tech session yet, but time will tell.
Questions?
