Hello all
Just received my intercom and was looking for some additional ideas on how to mount the boom mic in the open face helmet? Velcro?,glue?,bubble gum?
any ideas would be helpful. We use a type of security bolt at work (sexhauer)
but I dont know about drilling the hole in the helmet?
Thanks

I have a baehr headset and here is a mounting hole on the rear ed of the boom Inside the helmet is a etal bracket that holds the helmet straps to the helmet (Shoei 3/4 helmet). I ued a zip tie to connect the two. I also wrapped part of the boom inside the helmet with velcro. Been that way for over a year.

What sort of intercom and what sort of helmet?

It is a Baehr intercom and the helmet is a Bell Mag 8 open face, also which side should it go on? I think most that I have seen are on the left? I see where the chin strap is mounted to the helmet and I should be able to get a zip tie through it then reinforce it with some velcro.
Thanks for the ideas,
Glen

Hey Glen,
I had Sierra Electronics (Troy, OH) install the Baehr headsets in our helmets. On the Baehr miniboom mic, they attached (glued?) a 1/2" plastic square with adhesive on one side. The square acts as a mounting base. The adhesive sticks to the inside of the helmet, and you simply route the mic between the helmet shell and helmet liner.
Left or right side? I don't know that it matters. EVERY headset with a boom mic I've seen has the mic on the left; why that is, I don't know. Good question!

The important part is that the MIC is pointing in the correct direction. After that it's "operator choice"..
I have mine on the "left" so that my clutch hand can reach where the boom attaches to the helmet.. easier to adjust the MIC position for me.
To "mount"/attach the boom, from the "thin plastic liner" inside the helmet at about my mouth level, I used a VERY sharp knife and cut two "parallel slits" (imagine an EQUAL SIGN = ) the width of the boom apart and as long as the width of a Ziptie. I threaded the Ziptie through the slots from between the helmet exterior toward the inside then back toward the outside of the liner.
Once Ziptie was in place I ran the boom up to it and secured with the Ziptie. The "lock" part of the Ziptie I rolled upward. With only the Ziptie flat part on the inside of the liner, you don't even notice the extra bulk.

Thanks for all the advice on the install,
Took the helmets apart, and with some industrial strength velcro and an exacto knife, I think they came out pretty nice!
And it is suppose to warm up, so I will hook the unit up tommorrow and give it a test.
With the Baehr unit, what do you need to do with the bike radio to put it in the intercom mode? Or does it pick that up automaticly?
Thanks

GlenIf I understand the question correctly, you don't do anything. Once the helmet is plugged in the intercom is on. You will hear the bike radio (or other audio source) until you talk to your passenger, at which point the vox will mute the bike audio. If you are riding solo the intercom stays in "sing-along" mode -- the vox is not active.

I used self adhesive zip mount bases on the inside of the helmet to secure my boom mike, saved having to cut anything.

Excellent. Good job, Glen. Bring the bike to the IMS in Cleveland later this month and we'll take a look -- road conditions permitting, of course.

KevFWIW, this looks like the same thing on my miniboom mic.
