Hello, everyone:
I was out riding the other day and noticed that my eyes were drawn too far off the road when I looked at the Garmin 2820 I have mounted on the front brake reservoir with a RAM mount. After all the work I did to mount it there, I'm now regretting it. (Insert the "I told you so" here.) I once saw an LT with a shelf mounted above the dashboard, but screwed into existing holes around the windshield bracket, thereby avoiding drilling into the top of the instrument cover. Does anyone know who makes it and where it can be purchased? Otherwise, I'll need to get the BMW cradle and mount the GPS where the factory one would go. If I go this route, I'm guessing it's off the the stealer for some major wallet hemorrhage, right?

One of the best options available..
I like their stuff, even if they did copy one of my light bracket designs.

Great product from BMR, however I think you will still need to drill some holes and put provided well-nuts in place, if its the same as my 2002. I prefer the GPS up high, as opposed to sitting on the radio stingray, allowing your eyes to drop while looking at the GPS.
BMR also makes extensions for the shelf for both right and left sides in the event you want to put more goodies on your bike..

Joe,
I have one of these shelves which I purchased and never used. Take a look in the classified section.
Take care,

Hi, Joe - this shelf (http://www.accolademotorsports.com/eshopprod_cat_2487-21742-15640_product_315675_keyword_RCU+AND+Designs.K1200LT_ACCESSORY_SHELF.htm) is the one you describe. I've got one on ole Toad; use it to mount the TireSmart monitor, an XM Roady XT and it's antenna puck. It's fairly stable, except when on some really rough roadways. I put a piece of foam pipe-wrap on top of the dashboard, under the RCU shelf, just in case ole Toad starts to buckin' and shakin' too much. I notice that the dealer there sez it's available only in powder coat black. Mine wuz that color when I got it, butt I grabbed a rattlecan of match-the-dash paint and sprayed it good. Blends right in and looks good.
NOW - having said that, I'm guessing here that the Garmin unit is gonna impact the stability of the RCU shelf a lot more than the BMR shelf. There is just too much leverage length 'tween the attaching screws on the windshield bracket and the position of the RCU shelf. Without adding something to stabilize the shelf, that GPS screen is gonna be somewhat blurry just when you need it the most!! Heck, I've had some difficulty in reading the small screen of the Roady at times, and it weighs just ounces.
Suggestion - take a check around your 'hood and see if anyone has either shelf you can do a show-n-tell review on. Good luck.

Joe, it's a "trade off" the shelf put's the GPS in your line of sight but it's farther away and you have to "reach" to work it, that "shifts" your upper body weight.
The advantages are it keeps the dashlight "glare" out of the windshield at night and you can add an infinite number of farkles to it.
The factory mount is a "cleaner" installation and an easier reach but just a little below your "line of sight" but there will be less "bounce" there.
If you do go factory check with some of the used part vendors,
there's a shelf for sale on our forum right now.

PS. You might be able to see some other ideas at our RTE in January.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to think it through and try to see some examples before I take another plunge. I might even try a shorter RAM bar, as I have a medium sized bar on there now (the small one was out of stock and I needed it pronto). My other problem is that "Margaret" (my pet name for the GPS voice) is silent, since I couldn't get the audio to tie in with my existing J&M CB/Intercom, so I must rely on visual cues. Hence, my concern about its current location. Thankfully, I'm not in a hurry so I have time to look. BTW, I'll try to make the RTE in January. Thanks for the invitation, Hans. NascaLT had already mentioned it to me in a PM. I just have to see if I'm on call that weekend.
