I am going to put a GPS on my '07 K1200GT in the near future and I love the looks of the factory mount kit. It looks so clean between the handlebars. What I hate is the price ($900. new). :(
How is your GPS mounted? What model is it? Could you post any pics? Would love to see some alternatives.

I have a simple RAM mount - a piece of steel with a 1" ball on one end and a hole in the other. The hole is for a longer bolt that replaces one of your handlebar bolts. Sits in the middle of my bars. Best bit of all? $35 total cost, including shipping. They come in black, chrome or painted. Mine's black.

I can buy a really good gps for less than $900 and anyone who spends that much on a gps mount has to have more money than sense, but there are a lot of those around....

You can get the factory mount for just over $100.00. If you pair that with a Garmin Cradle (for your particular unit) from Cyclegadgets, you should be out less than $150.00. You will need a power cable also, unless you already have one. The factory mount "kit" is for the factory GPS units (Navigators) and will not work with the regular Garmin Units. I have the factory mount on my 07 Gt with a cradle that I got from Cyclegadgets.
You can buy the whole "kit", but unless you have one of the "NAV" units, the only thing in that kit that will work is the mounting plate and the cable.
I have used the ram mounts, Big-Mak shelf, plates that mount to the bars, etc. and I like the factory mounting plate the best. The factory plate puts the gps in the middle of the bars and it looks like the bike came from the factory with the GPS mounted.

I use a nuvi on a ztechnik mount that fits in the left handlebar hole. See pirates site for the mount. The picture of the nuvi on it is mine. The mount will take any brand of gps.

On my GS Adventure I have a Garmin 376C in a Touratech Locking Mount on the windscreen crossbar using a Touratech Adapter.
On the LT, I have another locking Touratech Mount on a BMR Co-Pilot Shelf.

Jack, if you want to go to a Garmin Zumo, many folks prefer the 550 Zumo to the BMW-branded unit. It has more features and is less expensive. It also comes with a variety of mounts - I saw a bike that used the mounts that came with the 550 Zumo and the GPS box wound up right in the middle of the handlebars - right where the BMW-supplied mount would be - all for no extra charge. Too late for me - I bought the BMW mount.

Here's the Zumo 550 mounted on the OEM Nav II/III bracket for the GT.
On this picture you have a better look on how the bracket is mounted. The picture was taken when I still had the BMW Nav II.

I simply used the double sided permanant tape that came with my 2610 and glued it to the top of the stingray. No drilling required. I was a little nervous about it falling off, but it has been sitting there for 3 years and 20,000 miles
I tried to upload a pic, but it was too big.

Hmm, something tells me we're talking different bikes here. You mean you haven't heard of the new HP2-GT Stingray ultimate sport-tourer? Close to 200 horsepower and 100 lbs lighter with an 11 gallon tank and bluetooth intercom with mp3 built in. Fairly docile in normal traffic, but if you push the limits too far it'll sting you . . . :D

Plenty of home brew installation on here :D
I went for the "expensive" solution  and got the BMW adaptor from my dealer for the princely sum of £9 ($18) which fits perfectly to the handlbars.

Two pics of my GT's cockpit. I have the Big Mac tankbag and shelf. That type of tankbag doesn't allow the use of the stock BMW GPS placement . . . which is just fine with me anyway. I personally think that the stock position it too far away from a rider's line of sight. Just my opinion. YMMV

I also used the Gadget Guy mount. Follow the link:-

Works fine and is visible whilst using the BMW tank bag. I've even got round to tidying up the wiring now!

The cost of the BMW Nav system is high but the mounting and position is about perfect. So I rationalized the cost!
Actually, I already had the Nav II on my GS so all I had to do was buy the GT mounting kit and cradle. That way, I can move the Nav bike to bike.

I went to the PDX dealer and asked for the factory gps mount whcih they couldn't seem to find in the system.
Any parts #'s? I plan to use the BMW mount and just bolt up the Zumo cradle which sounds way to easy.

Messenger!!!! That is the cockpit of an advanced fighter jet!!! With all those instruments, nobs and options :D Soon you will have to add shelfs that stick outside the bike to mount more, if you need it.
Hehe I love it :)

My GPS is in the lower position and I have the XM puck and radar detector on the Big Mac shelf. I made the box for the radar detector to waterproof it.

When I first got the GT, I had it so I could use the FRS and phone, but stashed away so I wouldn't have to stop for rain. I didn't have the LT set up like that and it was a real pain putting baggies on, or whatever was the the soup du jour at the time.
BTW, I pulled the FRS and phone cable and have fallen back into anti social, don't wanna talk to anyone while riding, behaviour.

Hey Jack,
Been reading up on the GT, (my bike in the future), and I noticed you were talking about a GPS. I bought a Garmin 2820 new, in the box for 423.00 from buyeretail.com. Now this one of course won't work with the BMW mount/cradle but it will do everything else and more namely, XM radio. I'm sure you are aware that the 2820 and the BMW badged GPS are one in the same.
BTW, next time you see Gilly, tell him to be a man and come on over here with a check to get my LT !

The 2820 is the same as the Nav 3, I think, but the newer BMW Navagator is a Garmin Zumo. BMW makes cradels/brackets for both. I have the SP 2610 and it mounts the same as the SP 2820. I use a BMW bracket for my mount, and as I recall, I think I paid around $35.00.

Man, that is cold! But, then again, he should "man-up" so you can go get that GT. BTW, what color are you looking at? You know that BLUE is fastest!

You know that BLUE is fastest! :dance:Yeah, those Blue ones always looked fast to me. At least judging by how fast they get blurry in my mirrors. :D

Jack,
I could live with the black one but I really like the blue one best. It seems like everybody else does too. Interested to see what colors come out for 09..
Yes that was cold about Gilly but he needs to take charge. She'll only be mad for about 2 weeks, or so.....he's got a garage big enough to live in till then!

One More Mount. I just got one of these from Pirate's Lair website. Ztecnhik. It mounts on the two screws that secure the handlebars. Looks very tech and is adjustable for height and angle. In lowest position it allows sight of instruments and display. Cost was $88. Very satisfied. All of these center of the steering mounts seem to restrict access to the ignition key area a bit.

I really wanted a blue K1200GT. When I bought mine a year ago and K1200GTs were hardly available at all, blue was the least popular color to my surprise. That made it easier to find one when I was ready to buy.
At the time, I couldn't understand why people wanted the other colors - perhaps they were afraid of the extra speed and female attraction inherent in the blue ones. :)

Have an 08 R1200RT. Thought mounting the Tom Tom Rider would be easy. HA HA :) Got from BMR Products the mount and swivel mount. Pricey ($239), but very neat. The dock for the Rider would not mount flush against the swivel mount. This problem was solved by drilling a 1" hole in the swivel mount.

Hello,
Although we use the BMW kit for the Nav III we used RAM Mounts for the rest of the things we needed and they have have a good extensive range that may suit you. The brake/clutch reservoir mounted RAM ball is a solid base to work from that does not affect line of sight to the instrument panel. Attached are photos of how we operate at present.
Cheers..........Martin

I used the BMW mount as well and just slotted the holes so the SP3 would fit.

Well here you go. This is the way it was set up when i bought it used from the previous owner. The GPS gets in the way of the factory RH mirror a bit, but I don't use those since getting the RS mirrors anyway. Hope this helps.
