To me, the sentence is a joke.

Joke...hell it's a slap in the face of every animal lover on the planet and it amounts to a slap on his wrist.

I only hope that he is never allowed back into professional sports.

Or better yet, let him play and if he doesn't do well hang him, electrocute him, then drown him.
