New to the forum, looking for a recommendation on a top case (tail hard case) for a 2004 K1200GT. I bought the bike back in March of this year. I am very pleased to own a BMW of this quality especially coming back from a hiates of over 30 years. Why I stopped riding for so long is another story. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Paul :bmw:

I have a 2004 K1200RS, essentially the same as the GT. Originally I had a BMW top case, but the attachment mechanism was horrible. The first time it fell off was on a Sunday ride with a number of friends, including the service manager from the local dealer. The box simply fell off 150 miles into the ride. I didn't know it was missing until my daughter tried to lean against it and nearly fell off herself. We turned round and a mile down the road a friend was trying to carry it on his bike. I had it replaced under warranty.
Having had that experience, I then placed a bungee net around the new case every time I went out. The second one fell off (was caught in the net) 6 months later. I had hit a bump in a carpark 400 yards earlier, so I guess that was what dislodged the case, but it should have been able to withstand it.
I now have a Givi case. I had to replace the rear BMW rack with the Givi equivalent. The case snaps right on, with no problems and no net for over 35,000 miles.

I don't have any experience with the BMW top case, but after spending two weeks with a Givi on an R1200 RT, I wouldn't wish a Givi on my worst enemy. Not only did the case feel flimsy, I found the latch mechanism for opening/closing almost impossible to operate without using two hands and an equal number of expletives. The latch itself is fiddly POS, and is compounded by the fact that you can't leave the lock 'unlocked'. I was always trying to find the d*** key.
I swore on more than a daily basis if I ever bought a bike with a Givi case, the first thing I'd do is throw it in the nearest trash can.
