Today was the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Naval Air Forces of the Japanese Empire.


The Arizona sank in less than nine minutes after a 1,760 pound armor-piercing bomb struck and pierced the battleship's deck and detonated in its ammunition magazine, igniting fires that engulfed the ship.


Four in five servicemen on the USS Arizona 1,177 in all did not survive the day.

It was the greatest loss of life of any ship in U.S. naval history.

More people died on the Arizona than any other ship as 1,177 servicemen, or about 80% of the Arizona's crew, perished.

The surprise attack which began at 07:55am local time killed 2,390 Americans and injured 1,178.

Twelve ships sank and nine vessels were heavily damaged. Over 320 U.S. aircraft were destroyed or heavily damaged by the time the invading planes were done sweeping over military bases from Wheeler Field to Kaneohe Naval Air Station.

The last of the Surviving Veterans still able to travel and attend today's Memorial Services in Hawaii were present and accounted for; however its doubtful many will attend the next significant, 70th memorial gathering in 2011.
