I'm in the process of installing XL J-pegs and have a question concerning the factory written instructons, it says to drill the two 1/2 " holes for the large mounting bolts and then mount the black plastic wing cover and trace around the shoulder of the bolts, remove the cover and trim the holes to size.
I have the right size hole saws, can't I just drill the two holes to the proper size to start with. or is there a posible alingment problem? I didn't find anything in the archives that addresses this question. I just what to make sure I don't ruin a pair of wing covers.

I've always started with a 1/4 guide hole then used a hole saw to get the big hole. I then used a dremel tool to make the fine adjustments needed to get the clearances right, since it's nearly impossible to get it dead on perfect the first try. The trick is getting the wing covers to sit still while drilling the large hole. I held them by hand on all the sets I've installed since putting it in a vice or clamp might scratch up the visible surface. Otherwise thee's no reason you can't proceed as you want to.

I've installed three sets now, and find that a Dremel is really the tool to use. I drill the front hole first (the smaller of the 2) using about a 3/8ths bit. Then I put the covers in place, install the bolts and pegs up to the plastic, then use a Sharpie and outline everything. Take it all back off and finish up with the Dremel. Looks like they grew there. :)

Let's see now, currently the wish list is:

XM radio
GPS
Jpegs (or similar product)
Gerbing heat controller

Who knows? If we have just the right warm spell (read: "no snow"), I could come down and help ya, no problem.

Will work for food! http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/deal.gif

Thanks for all the input. Once I got into it I realized I was being a bit paranoid. it really was no big deal. Now all I need is a major thaw so I can get out and try them. Hopfully I won't have to wait till next Spring.
