OK, I figured I'd come up with an extra screw or something after taking three months to replace my clutch (and about two dozen other repairs/upgrades).

But I was surprised to find this doohickey on the shelf as I was getting down to the last pieces of tupperware. It's about a foot long - sorry I didn't put anything in the photo for scale reference.

While I'm searching the parts fiche pictures, I thought I'd post it here in case anybody recognizes it. Hopefully I don't have to go too deep to install it...

That appears to be the heat baffle that goes on top of the muffler. The hole in the "protrusion" is hooked to a stud that points down a few inches in front of the rear tire, and the other two holes are for the fasteners on top of the muffler. IIRC access to the part can be obtained by removing the left (clutch) side passenger foot peg plate.

Hope this helps.

Yep, that is what it is. May have to drop the exhaust to get it back in though. It is a pretty necessary part, to help keep heat off the ABS system and battery.

Any idea where I'd find this thing in the service manual? Can't find it in exhaust or ABS sections. I think the FM mentions it in the frame section, calling it a shield for the reverser control unit, but it is not pictured there, either.

Look in ETK, or one of the on line parts lists. It is in the exhaust system, "Heat Resistant Plate".

you are right, it also protects the reverser module, as well as the ABS system.

I'd already checked that... saw the part, but it's just sitting out to the side of the exploded view, not showing how it's lined up, layered with the other parts, or what fasteners go thru the holes. Not sure what the torque specs are either. I suppose I'll figure it out as I go along, but it would be nice to have a sanity check from the FM.

I just saw my heat shield as I have the sides off this morning. Orient it like in your pic, like a ski facing forward. It goes under the reverser and the coolant reservoir. There are three mount points. The outboard most one is attached to the bracket that holds the nut for the rear bolt of the passenger foot peg mounting plate. There are three brass, maybe, bolts that seem to have no hex head sides, just rounded. The nuts have integrated washers. HTH.

Took me a while to get back to the computer after my last post, but by the time I read your post, I'd already figured it out :thumb: Disappointing that the parts fiche doesn't even show the part in its correct orientation, besides not having the dotted lines to the mounting points.

For the benefit of anyone else down the road, here's what the part looks like installed:

Dave:
Looks like you got it.

What color is that coolant?
