Has anyone ever done that here? I mean, if you're going to spend so much money on one then you would wan your color right? Rather than settling for what was in stock?
How long did you have to wait? When did you order? etc...

I didn't order it but the color I wanted was due out of the factory on the first of April (2004) and coming to the dealer anyway. It arrived for a June 5th delivery to me. I would say back up a month or two and that should do it.

It's kinda like "Ford".. you can have any color you like as long as it's black."
Well.... sorta... I'd say put some $ in your dealers' hands..but don't let it go.. yet...
tell him/her/it what color you'll buy.. asd when they can give you an apx. date, let go of the cash.
It will probably work out that you can get whatever color you want.... if you pay to have it done after you buy the bike.

I heard a rumor that some people like to ride so much they buy out of state just so they can ride it back home. Course, they buy the bike they want.

These guys are just like car dealers, they can see what color is anywhere and do a swap with another dealer. Should be no trouble for you to get the color you want.

...the LT production is not going to be much this year because of the popularity of the other bikes. Hard to believe that the theoretically 2nd largest volume US dealer cant get a a blue one if they wanted to.
I know somebody that did buy his Wing in PA and rode it back up here. He loves that bike.
I am fairly sure that if I went into the dealer with a nice down payment in cash that they would bend backwards to get me what color I wanted. Thanks for confirming that.

I have a very good relationship with a dealer two states away and have bought two LTs in the manner you suggest. I told them what minimum accessory level I would accept and my specific color preference. Some years my color is not offered.
(I also learned that it can be expensive to move a new bike between dealers. Many folks thinks they deserve a slice of the deal.)
One year I was ready for a trade but I couldn't get my color so I passed that year and got it next year. This year, I placed my "order" for an '08 on the rumor that my color was to be offered. I just got another LT !
To answer your question, yes, it works for me.

I picked out everything I wanted (which was everything other than the CD changer) and placed the order. My order was placed in mid-May. I got notification of the bike's production date in June. The bike was built in July and I had it the day after it rolled off of the line. Of course, I only live 4 hours from Munich so the shipping time was nothing.
But, from my experience, you should expect a 6-12 week wait from order to manufacture. Then it is a matter of logistics after that.
FYI: I had to special order mine. I needed a US-spec bike (I'm an American) and they don't stock those over here. :)
