Weather-sealing Gerbing plugs

I had to take apart the main power plug on my wife's Gerbing electric jacket when it failed to work - found a loose wire - fixed it. Took mine apart also, to check it.

In order to disassemble the power plugs, I had to remove a blob of weather protection sealer where the power cord entered the end of the plug.

Now that both plugs are checked out, I took a fresh tube of RTV (GE Silicone Seal) and applied a blob to the point where the power cord entered the plug. The RTV did not adhere to the electrical wire or the end of the plug.

Any suggestions of another material (other than GE Silicone Seal) that I can try that will make a weather seal on the end of the power plug ??? Thanx.

Bob, did you try to degrease the plastic with rubbing alcohol, on a Q tip, and also lightly sand the surface to be sealed. My Gerbing wire feels like it has some water proofing on the surface. RTV sticks well to non oily surfaces.

I'll have to try that, Barnett. The service tech @ Touring Sport BMW suggested cleaning everything with nail polish remover before applying RTV. The blob of sealer that I removed in order to disassemble the connector looked and felt like RTV, so I was really surprised to see that it didn't stick. I'll try again. Thanx.

Try hotmelt glue. I think that's what they use at Gerbing as a sealer.

Hey Bob, I have had luck sealing connectors like this with the Plastic Insulation Grip Dip made for hand tools.


Available at you local HomeFreakShow or Lowe's.
