View Full Version : Replacement grip - no vents

Didn't think about this. I purchased the non-heated LH grips to replace my torn heated grips as recommended here.
I noticed the non-heated have a closed end, whereas the stock heated grips have what appears to be vent openings in the end. I can only speculate that the open ends allow moisture to escape due to the heating cycles.
If that is true, has anyone that has replaced their heated grips with any kind of closed end grip noticed any problems developing? Such as corrosion on the bar or on the heating elements. Or do you think the closed end is no big deal?

Changed mine two years ago. Noticed the "vents" but didn't think a thing about it. Changed the throttle cables this last summer and while the grip assembly was pulled off didn't see any moisture / corrosion or anything unusual.
I guess a person could find a way to cut some vents in them after install if a problem shows up?

Thanks Duane,
That's good to hear that you replaced yours and had a chance to look at em a couple years later and see no problems.
Mine are now swapped also. Appreciate the feedback.

I have also replaced my grips with grips that don't have the hole in the end. No problems yet and they've gone through quite a few heating cycles..

My vote is for "No big deal". The bar is vented in the center where the wires exit anyway, so no pressure buildups can happen, and even if moisture condensed inside it would run down to the center where it is nearest openings to evaporate out of.

That's perfect David. I should have thought it through better to come up with the same conclusion. I saw the wires travel down the bar, just didn't occur to me that they need to exit somewhere.
Thanks guys.
No big deal.

Mine came with a vented grip on the left and the right grip is completely open on the end. I haven't noticed any effect yet of the open ended grip; should I be concerned? Whatever happened to QC?

Just curious why you went away from heated grips? I thought you had some cooler weather in NC, right? I'm happy w/ the stock grips, and ran the heat most of the day Sat. (temps in 40s & 50s)
However, if there is something I'm missing, I'd like to know.
Thanks,
Jeff

Sorry for the confusion Jeff,
No didn't go away from the heated grips. It's way cheaper to buy unheated grips, LH's because they are a couple dollars cheaper than RH's, and replace only the rubber grip portion leaving the heating elements in place on the bars.
BMW only sells grip assemblies, heated or unheated. Price difference is about $200.00 per side.
Yes, it gets real cold hear in NC and the heat is good to have.
Hope that helps clear things a bit.

I don't think he did away with the heat, he just replaced the rubber grip. You can't get the exact original without buying the entire heating unit (???). You can buy the replacement for non-heated grips (much less ???) and just swap the rubber. It's not exactly the same (no vent at the ends, and the replacements seem to be a few mm shorter).
I did this a while back and have have had no issues.
Whoops.

Just to be on the safe side, what P/N did you use for the grip? I remember in the past there was some confusion on which was the correct alternative P/N to use when replacing the heated rubber grip with the non-heated rubber grip.

I used two left grips, part # (32 72 2 332 619).
The left grip lists for $17, the right is $32. The rubber part that you'll end up using is the same for the left and the right. The difference is in the tubes underneath the rubber (throttle vs. no throttle), but you won't be using them if you're replacing the rubber on heated grips.

Yes, that is the same number I used. Looks like we have it ironed out now. $17 retail is still the going price, few dollars less than that and a lot longer wait from Chicago BMW.

:o
Thanks for filling me in.. I was wondering, why you would switch to non-heated grips..
My "newby-ness" showing.
