After rather aggressive shifting while touring the Blue Ridge, I found myself having problems downshifting my '99 K1200 (w/21k). Found the aluminum ball socket in the shifter linkage to be trashed.
I ordered parts from Columbus (OH) BMW including the ball w/bushing that screws directly into the the foot shifter and requested the socket on the shifter rod with retainer clip. Found the socket was only available as a unit w/the shifter rod (included 2nd socket on opposite end) so the needed $2.00 part cost me $38.00. Does anyone know of dealer that can supply this socket as individual piece in case I have this problem in the future?
Upon removal of the damaged ball and socket I found the unit to be dry of lubricate. When I installed the new parts I lubed them as it seems to make sense to lubricate moving metallic parts on any machine. Overall, the patient survived and seems to be shifting very smoothly.
Note: Columbus BMW went "above and beyond" in shipping the parts to me in a timely manner. They made a special order to assure I could enjoy this rare November riding weather in southern Ohio. Thanks guys!
