I just got off the phone with Amsoil Tech Support about their new oil filters for the LT.

For those that don't know, the filter number was SMF122. It has been replaced with EAOM122 and EAOM122C. The C means chrome. Physically, the new filter is smaller and the BMW filter wrench will no longer fit the new series of filters. Amsoil does sell a wrench that is supposed to work.

There has been some concern that the newer, smaller filter will not fit the LT properly. I have been assured by Amsoil that the new filters will fit. There is also no backflow valve in the new filter. In theory, since the orientation of the filter on the bike is up, a check valve shouldn't be needed.

Even with the new filter being smaller, it should filter as well since they've converted to a microfiber filter material.

If anyone runs into an issue with the new filter, I would suggest they contact Amsoil or a dealer so Amsoil will be made aware of the problem.

I've used the new EaOM filters and like them. The advantage for me is doubling the filter change interval when used with Amsoil oil (I hate the oily mess) which essentially lowers the filter cost by half, better filtration, flow and particle holding capacity than any other filter. The oil filter cap wrench is available for $2 from Amsoil.

Could you clarify your description of 'smaller', do you me that the Outside Diameter of the filter has been reduced? If my I assumption is correct, then the contact area of the rubber seal has been reduced, but by how much? Sounds to me like this filter has been designed to used else where, but hapens to fit an LT!

The new filter is shorter and smaller in diameter, but the o-ring seal appears to be about the same diameter, but not as thick. If you look at the old filter, you'll seal filter cover outside the o-ring. On the new filter there isn't as much case showing outside the o-ring. It should seal just fine.
