Why do you need a replacement? I would contact beemerboneyard.com first. If they don't have one now they will put you on their wanted list and get one eventually. I needed a throttle body last year and they got me one after a couple months. Was worth the wait$$$$$$

thought about that, there is even one on ebay, problem is, I dont want to go spend $$$$ on a used one that could be up to 7 yrs old and then within a few months have it start to go out. I would rather spend the money on a new one with a warranty and at least hope it will last another 5-6 yrs.

On Max BMW Microfiche site, the part number for the unit is
65107681942
This is the single CD unit- $710 YIKES!
When I blew my CD player, I switched to a tape deck that I found on ebay for less than $250 delivery included.
FYI, if you have a tape deck unit, you can contact BECKER directly and ask for advanced exchanged. If they have a tape deck in stock, you pay something like $150 and they will send you a refurbished one. When I checked with them over the summer, they did not have any CD units in stock. The Repair Rep. told me that BECKER considers these throwaways. :(
I blew my second unit last week and am also in the hunt for a new unit. Ithink once I save my pennies, I'm going with the tape deck again. Since I only listen to the Satellite Radio, I don't need the cassette or CD player.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply, I looked at chicago and they dont have that number in their system. Yes I have the cd version, so pretty much out of luck with exchanging it, I too primarily use satellite, so either cd or tape would be good for me, The only reason I want to replace it is due to the rear amp going out and not getting any sound out of the rear speakers, it would be nice if I could just replace that part. oh well "BRING MORE WALLET" ....

I am surprised that there is no plug converter setup from someone.
On the HD I think I used a BikeTronics unit that was plug and pray. You just unplugged your stock unit, connected this in line, and you could then use a Sony, or Alpine, Kennwood and a couple of other changers and still retain your hand controls for the unit. From there the sky was the limit, separate amps, any flavor of head unit, MP3/SAT/NAV/CD.
Has anyone seen this type of thing for BMW?
Is there a major reason this can/has not been done?

That one is for early bikes only, before April 2003 I believe. It is a plug in replacement for the tape player. The later one is the one I have for sale... Part no 65127692166 2003 K1200LT with in dash display. This one is NOT compatible with early bikes or the tape player.

There is another option....
Get a 12V stereo amplifier, the sort of thing that little boys put in their rust buckets to annoy the other road users at high volumes. They have a low impedance input so will connect to the bike's front speakers output. Connect the amp outputs to the rear speakers and Robert's your father's brother. The lowest power one available will be adequate, 25W ish RM per channel.
There is a small amount of room on top of the radio for stuff, but heat disappation might be an issue there.

Thanks Andy, I will try the amp first, see what happens, if it does not work then I will get a new radio. Just looked up the number at chicago bmw, price is $568, for the cd version

Question ... is the CD or tape deck where the actual stereo is, or will the radio still work without that deck that's inside the oddment cover?
There must be some way to just get rid of the whole gas tank stereo module and replace it with a regular car stereo chassis ... they really look like they are the same size ... has anyone done this?
My bike (a 2000 LT) originally came with the cassette tape player, but that failed when it was under warranty and it was replaced with a CD player, which plays CD's perfectly but doesn't have very good radio reception
If i can find a tape deck that works and is in good shape, I'm going to retrofit it with one of those ... that way I can use a tape adapter and just use an Ipod or Zune for my music and be done with it
I can't imagine that we are all stuck with this deck unit that's inside of the oddment cover and that our entire sound system is dead without it ... but I've yet to see a K12LT with a custom stereo besides the one with the custom GPS screen oddment cover ... is anyone doing anything with these besides replacing them with other factory units?
